Fender stripes history ??
Hey guys can anyone tell me the history of the fender stripes on the cobras ?
What they were used for and what colours, sizes etc. Thanks |
I could be wrong (wont be the first time) but I think they where mainly used in the endurance racing (ie race at night) so it was easier to identify the different drivers cars, a different color per car.

I thought it designated a rookie driver.

They were "team" stripes. "Back in the day" there might have been several teams running the same marque of car in a race...sometimes painted the same colors...thus a way to differentiate the cars. I know in perusing old race photos there are photos of different cars with different fender stripe colors though of the same marque.
Boxhead was right they were mostly used in endurance races. I may be wrong but I think the term "rookie stripe" came in being in USSRC(USA) racing when rookie drivers were required to have a distinguishing mark on their car to designate their status |

What I have read is that it is a quick identifier stripe. When a race car comes by in a pack of cars at 100mph plus, it is tough to read the numbers on the sides, but easy to see twin yellow or red stripes on the fender.
I thought that the rookies got a big letter T on the car... |

I love to play with the stripes on my ERA. I've run yellow, black and white DUCT TAPE for various effects. The last one was THREE white stripes angled back on each side, but not across the nose. Thats MY version of 'team stripes' (Sargent Cobra)!
I was running two yellow stripes on just one side, but my friend liked the look so much it's now considered 'his", so I was forced to get creative. :D I like to dress it up. I've painted the wheels black then red now white. The sidepipes black, currently white. The hood, flat black, now a semi flat black. To me the Cobra is like a 'canvass' waiting for some expression. I've run period correct decals (static cling) and meatballs in various places. I've had the radiator 'air splitter' out, currently 'in', the bumper hoops in, currently out. No end to the variations! So they live on the left hand side guard ?
And are there 2 stripes or just one solid stripe ? And they are how wide ? THanks guys |
Of course there is nothing 'correct' about Team Stripes on a 427 Cobra anyway, do your own thing.
But what about that 'left hand fender' (guard for those down under, I guess)? The Team Stripes were for easier identification of the car during a race. What SIDE of the car the stripes were on would logically depend on where the PITS were located! Counter clockwise course with the pits in the center of the track, left hand side. With pits on the outside of the track, right hand side! By the way, I VERY much prefer two stripes of the same width on a single fender (left hand or DRIVERS side in my case) for the best look. Sometimes I just goof around and try other combinations for fun. |
