Freight on Wheels from the USA
Guys
I've found some wheels, that I like, in the US. I've noticed some of you have brought your wheels in from the States as well. Can you give me some idea on which company you used to freight them in, how much it cost and how long it took? Thanks as always. Philip |

I spoke to a guy who suggested waiting till Xmas for a regular sale from Trigo, if you want to share a shipment, I'll get some too others are Vintage wheels and of course Halibrand. |
With the dollar so good Im seriously thinking of getting my wheels shortly as well. I researched the team three wheels a while back and I think these are what I would go for. Only US hallibrand copy that makes an offset close to what the CR needs (I think).
Very tight fit but I do want my wheels to sit out as much as they can. So any advice on shipping (and benefits of getting them to fit tyres as well) would be appreciated. :) Cheers |
Allow around Au$250 - $300 for a set of wheels air frieght to Australia.
For Tyres go to Tirerack.com It's a good time to buy with the $ the way it is my vintage wheels should be here next week. |
Thanks guys.
I have picked the wheels I want it was just the freight charges I was interested in. I am building a CR and have found it hard to find Halibrand look-a-likes that I like in a "shallow dish" style so I have gone for something different from Washington state. Philip |
About $200-$300 sounds right plus customs duty if over $AUD1000. See the Australian Customs site for details on the "Buying on the Internet" link. From memory it's 5% of the item's value plus GST (10% of the combined freight and value amount). I think mine were shipped by UPS (Vintage did this).

Hi Phil,
I just got my wheels in from Vintage and got an extra bill from the tax man, If the invoice states "made in the USA" you don't pay duty as per our free trade agreement and if the invoice is less than $1000.00 you avoid GST added an extra $550.00 to my account. Next time i'll by them one at a time:CRY: Hope this helps. |

Wheel freight
I ordered a set of wheels from Bob at Vintage wheels they were shipped as"vintage" (as in old wheels) by Bax Global air freight in four days at a total cost of $au376.00

Hi Barry,
Your lucky as i went the same way and Bax got me for the extras but explained import duty and gst loop holes after i had paid, regardless the wheels are worth it.;) |
Aus Dollar 83.5 US cents today....17 year high.....Hmmmmmmm :D
|
One at a time costs more in freight. Swings and roundabouts.
I used to get performance VW parts may years ago from the US marked as aviation parts and no GST or duty was payable. These were for use in gyrocopters and a couple of gyrocopter powered VW drag cars. You work it out. Not sure if this loop hole is still applicable. Certainly a good time to buy. |
