640HP LSX motor

Reading through Super Chevy mag (or one of those GM performance mags) at lunch time and read an article about the build up of an LSX motor for Reggie Jacksons Camaro. 454 cubic inch Iron LSX bottom end with LS7 heads on it and a 4 barrel manifold similar to my Victor Jr but with a carb on it. This monster made 640HP and 611 foot pounds of torque using a pump fuel friendly 11:1 comp.

The LSX block is an Iron version of the gen4 LS7 block and is interchangable with the LS1, LS2, L76 etc. It can be safely bored to 4.250" and has been designed with input from pro stock legent Warren Johnson. Supposedly it's good for 2500HP!

The great thing about this block is that it costs a fraction of the alloy LS7 block with loads of performance potential. And it's got room enough to build 500 cubes.

Here's some details on Reggies Camaro

Cheers

Leigh are you listening??

The idea of having a 427 cube motor does appeal to me greatly.

One of the 6 litre iron blocks with a stroker crank also looks good. 402 cubes for about $4500 (using all exsisting LS1 hardware, heads, intake, sump, exhaust etc.) is a great deal....

Gav is right - Leeroy are you reading this???? **) **)

One of the 6Ltr alloy blocks with a stroker crank sounds good to me. Just happen to have one of em sitting around somewhere. :) :)

Mike, I know ya just love aluminium and you also like CNC machines ;) :)

Would you like one of these?: http://w2wpowertrain.com/t-dartls-2.aspx

Plums 05-31-2007 06:23 PM

The beauty of the iron block is it's ability to bored, (up to 120thou) with a 4in. crank just 30thou over gives you 408.
The main advantage of the iron block though is it's strength. For forced induction or big revs the iron block is almost a must have.....

Aussie Mike 05-31-2007 10:03 PM

The LSX is Iron but it's a different animal to the 6.0 Iron truck block. It's got siamesed bores with a lot more material in there to easily take a 4.25" slug in there. It also supports 6 head bolts as well as the regular production 4 head bolts per cylinder. The other main thing is that it will support upto a 4.5" stroke crank. Combine that with a 4.25"bore and you have 511 cubic inches.:3DSMILE:

Wot you fellas have against aluminium anyways?. ;)

Is this tuff enough?: http://www.w2wpowertrain.com/pc-101-...ort-block.aspx

Aussie Mike 05-31-2007 10:28 PM

It's automotive porn Les. It's pure exotica and unfortunately for us mere mortals it's not as readily obtainable as the LSX block is.

I have to go have a cold shower now.

Have a look at this.

How long do you think before those pipes melted. :)

Aussie Mike 05-31-2007 10:56 PM

I like this one: TSP 454

Or this one: TSP 427

Cheers

Rebel1 05-31-2007 11:03 PM

Gawd...that 427 for me thanks. :)

Whats surprising is the costs....granted $US but that's a great price....why even try building one from bits yaself ?.

Sorry for the confusion. The 6 litre block I was referring to is the Truck block (as Mike stated) and has been used for hi-po applications in Australia for years now. These blocks are a real bargain and can be bought brand new with a 4.000 inch crank for $2000. Hence by the time you get rods, pistons, bearings, a new cam etc. you end up around $4500. Even with a very mild cam you'll get over 300 rwkW's out of this...**) **)
If you were on a real tight budget you could even use your exsisting cam (it would be very torquey, though she would run out of puff pretty quick).

If your engine recently went out to lunch, I reckon this would be just the ticket... ;)

Hi Plums
Would you have any more info on were the best place is to sorce the 6lt block & crank as I am trying to decide weather to buy a 400+ ci LS stroker short motor or build one myself.

Plums 06-03-2007 08:04 AM

You can try Suburban Imports, they usually have the block and crank combo. You really can't beat 402 cubes (or 408, 414 etc.) for around $4000. The 402 cube version is as square as they come too, with a 4 inch bore and 4 inch stroke. For under $5000 you can throw in a nice big cam and make some real solid numbers....

Aussie Mike 06-03-2007 04:54 PM

Speak to Jeremy at Eagle Autos in Melbourne. He proced an Iron 6.0 block, 4" crank, rods, pistons and everything for a 408 short block at around $4500.

Their phone number is (03) 8710 3000 His extension is 820.

Cheers

Here is some interesting info on LS Blocks.
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showth...5&page=1&pp=20

The way it is going one should be able to get a stuffed LS1/Ls2 block for almost nothing from a wrecker and sleeve to 427.

Wonder if the cost of sleeving these things will come down. :)

Interesting that the LS2 and LS7 blocks are the same except for the sleeves.
