brake lines

gday guys im setting up brakes, booster etc at the moment and was wondering about the brake line that runs from front to rear should that be 1/4 inch or is 3/16 ok ,using jag front and rear calipers, also should tube nuts be locktite or not.. thanks darrell

OZVENOM 06-13-2007 06:09 AM

lines

hi you should run 3/16 " lines and the jag calipers use
3/8"unf flare nuts get long threaded ones they are easier to fit. The only time you would run 1/4" is for the clutch slave if you have a large diameter slave cyl ie over 7/8 bore.

Darrell - I got all my brake line stuff from Martins brake and clutch on Blaxland Rd. He does ADR approved braided lines and flared all my hard lines once I had measured and bent - prices were very reasonable too.

Phone # is 46281177

Cheers,
Andrew

yeah i know that feeling, been thinking about wheeling the patio heater into garage, engine bay coming aloing nicely ,slow and steady wins the race, are they copper rivets or something else

darrell

Tenrocca 06-13-2007 11:47 PM

Nope they are called "clecos". Like a temporary rivet that is inserted and removed with special pliers. Bloody great bit of gear. Up until a few months ago I had no idea GIZMOS like this even existed! :)

Out of interest, what are you guys paying for brake lines, by the meter/foot - or enough length for a Cobra? Ballpark will do. I'm going to see if it's worth shopping around or just buying from my kit builder. Braided lines also if you don't mind. Cheers!

I've just been going to my local ABS outlet and they've been very helpful with supplying line and flaring the ends. I haven't got a flaring tool that does a good job on brake lines and I'd have to do a lot of flares to justify the cost of one. The guys at ABS have been charging me $5 per flare. They also made my braided lines to my specs and with the ends I wanted and have been helpfull with ideas of what styles of ends I might find suitable. Draging a big variety of fittings out to show me.

From memory my braided lines were about $60 each or so depending on length.

You don't need a special bender for the brake line if you are careful but there are some brake line benders availble fairly cheap.

H.I.S. supplied me some nice rubber lined P clips that were great for mounting the brake lines and fuel lines. They keep the line isolated from the chassis so you dont get any vibration noise etc.

Cheers

Thanks Mike - I'll be chatting to ABS in the very near future. Feel free to post some pics of that gear in your gallery, I'd be much obliged! I tried googling "H.I.S." but no luck - who are they?

Darrell

Not sure where you are based but Better Brakes next to Moorabbin airport have been excellent and with v. good prices. A mobile mechanic mate recommended this guy and I would similarly give my support.

Bought a 5m roll of bundy tube and my two braided front brake hoses with the fittings to suit my specs for $91 from here. Braided rears with banjos etc were $76 and these prices were March last year. My brakes are jag all round.

I paid $93 for a dual flaring tool, probably too much, but have been very happy with the results and have used it for other flaring needs around the car as well. Also belatedly bought a simple tube bender again a worthwhile purchase.

Cheers

boss290cobra 06-14-2007 07:54 AM

sambo, 3/16 line + $3.90 mtr, purchased 6 mtrs which is heaps, tube nuts about $1.50 each, flaring tool for single and double flaring $45 on ebay, pipe bender(extension spring) available from all major hardware outlets $6.00 as for braided line havent purchased yet but soon, also bought complete piston seal and clip kit , o rings incl pads etc for front and rear and handbrake assy pads for jag, overhauled booster ,newmaster cyl for $240.00 very reasonable indeed, though it does pay to shop around
