Steering Wheels?
I noticed in the threads in the last few days something about ADR compliance and steering wheels. I was thinking of a Moto Lita wheel with a leather rim. Are all such wheels unacceptable and why? What do they want for ADR compliance:rolleyes: ??

Hey Thats a good question.
I know that quite few guys are using Moto Lita wheels here(West Australia) without any problems as far as i know. As long as you have a working horn either on the stalk or in the centre of wheel and its from a reputed manufacturer, i dont think they are too concerned. ... But then .. i could be wrong. anyway we all know that the licence and technical people have different rules from state to state. |
Thanks Rob. There might be something about the spokes in the wheel too maybe. Not sure and the ADR rules that one can download are not that specific.

Best to speak to an engineer who is familiar with all the restrictions in your state. Also, if you update your forum profile you might get more helpful answers, as people from your state will know whether or not their past experiences are applicable.

Padded
HI Merv and Sharon,
I think you need to have a padded steering wheel. The classic revival uses a susuki column so I just used that wheel and changed to the wood wheel after engineering. Phil |
Philm is correct, you need to have the same style of crash foam in the centre of your s/wheel as you have to use on the dash leading edge.
I am using a four spoke momo and these s/wheels come with the padding. To use a motolite or similar one has to wait until after engineering / rego. Just part of the raft of items that mysteriously drop off the car post reg. and are replaced over night by the garage fairy. Cheers |

Sadly got it to the starting gate but there is something amiss and it wouldn't start. In the words of Mister yota - Bugga!!
Computer was tested in another car which ran so know it's not that. Am getting the sparky to talk with my contact and I expect a solution will be forthcoming. But the lit up and operable gauges, flashing lights and buzzing thermo on over-ride etc etc all looked great. Shame as Sunday was a perfect day for illicit test driving. This Saturday all should be complete. If I can figure out how to post a video, there should be some footage once we get her going. |
how to pass in VIC
My car was registered last year. I have an autotechnica wooden wheel with metal spokes. The guy at vic roads did not accept it and said that the metal spokes had to be padded.
I went to clark rubber and bought some rubber tubing. I put the tubing around the spokes and centre (just cut out a hole for the horn). I covered the whole thing with black tape. It looked crap but it passed. I will put a picture in my gallery. As far as I am aware it just has to comply with the regulations, it does not matter whether or not it looks permanent:D Its like putting black tape over the chrome bits (windscreen surround etc.). They know your going to take it off but so long as it complies at the time you should be OK. |
yeah, typical red tape rules and guidelines. Long as they can say it complies, their job is done.
