Gearing
Thanks Craig. Yes on paper it looks well managed with the low ratio diff and the O/D 6th on the T56, but in between is where the interest may lie. I guess one can always alter diff ratios later, depending on needs.

Merv,
There are some big power nissans that are used in all types of motorsports using the R200 differential. The R32 GTST rear end that is mainly used has a 4.3 to 1 ratio. The R32 GTR rear end has a 4.1 to 1 ratio. GTR rear ends can be used but as there are slight differences between the GTR and GTST rear ends and there is a fair bit more fiddling around to fit them(I speak from the experience of fitting a GTR rear end). A couple of cobras I know that have 4.6 ltr quad cam fords and GTST rear ends that use second gear to take off most of the time. One has a T56 and the other one has a T45 gearboxes. As Craig said the best way to find out what is right is to drive the car first, then modify if needed to suit your needs. Warren |
Warren's understating the differences between GTS-T & GTR rear-ends. Just about everything is different between them. You would think Nissan would have kept as much the same as possible, even the way the carrier mounts in the cradle is totally different. You also have another very similiar rear-end to the GTR, that's the R32 GTS-4. I've just recently been GTR diff shopping and it's a nightmare. Seems the easiest way to spot a GTR diff(from GTS-4) is to look for the LSD oil sticker. Or if it's not there, try and turn the drive shafts to confirm LSD type.
In my books the only reason to chase a GTR diff is to get the (very impressive) mechanical LSD. All the rest are viscous LSD. The 4.1 ratio can be considered a bonus I suppose. You can see why most Harrison owners just use the GTS-T rear. GTR rear is just not worth the hassle. The same goes for people thinking that front R32 GTR calipers are the same as R33 GTS-T calipers, they look similiar, but have numerous differences, one difference can cause some inconvenience when upgrading to bigger rotors. R32 GTR caliper is better for bigger rotors, but the R33 GTS-T caliper looks to be a stiffer unit, so who knows which is the best. |
Thanks guys! Seems leave well enough alone and see what one gets. The T56 seems to have good cruising capability on paper. The only question is if first gear is useable. Time will tell.

Resurrecting this thread after nearly 5 years! Thought I'd update everyone on my brake pad upgrade.
Last weekend I fitted QFM HPX pads to the front and Remsa pads to the the rear. Front brakes are near new VZ Commodore calipers with slotted discs and the rears are freshly rebuilt calipers and machined solid discs from an R33 GTS-T. The pads were supplied by Race Brakes in Yarraville. Bled the system (Castrol dot 4) and after bedding in I'm very impressed with the improved stopping power. Plenty of progressive bite from this setup, which includes a rebuilt XF Falcon booster but no other mods such as proportioning valves or wagon spec parts that have been discussed elsewhere. I haven't pushed too hard on the street but the fronts appear to protest before the rears. Can't wait to test properly on the track. :D |
Hi Paul, well done. Sounds like a great result. I too upgraded my pads front and rear from Racebrakes in Yarraville. My main reason was that I dont have a booster, just two master cylinders and the pedal effort was not to my liking - they worked well at Winton last year. Looking forward to seeing your beast in agner on the track this year. Cheers Gregg.

Is that a condition particular to you Victorians !?? LOL Rog |
Doesn't look like the Cobra will be on the track for ShelbyFest, maybe spectating though. With engineering and the hardtop project, it's just not a good time to be buying a helmet and paying for a weekend at the track. Will be hitting Calder in the very near future though.

Bugger. Oh well I assume you'll drive it up? If so will be good to have a look.
