Side Vent Attachment

What do you use to bond the steel brackets (holding the Stainless Side Vents) to the fiberglass body. Thanks Bruce |

I used body putty to bond a piece of 1" angle alum below opening. I rivited another piece of angle alum to the top of the vent itself. Then I glued velcro to the matching surfaces. The velcro holds the vent in place even on the track.
It's nice to be able to remove them when needed. Makes for easier access for everything in that area. |
Raising the dead here... Bruce how did you end up fixing your side vents?
Sikaflex was also suggested to me but I want to be able to remove them a little more easily. Great suggestion from bobcowan, thanks! |
I only used Sikaflex to bond the aluminium angle to the body. The vents are held in by 4 small hex bolts on each.

The fender badges that I have, have fairly long studs welded to the back ( they came like that) requiring holes to be drilled to mount them. Some inner tube rubber cut to fit behind the badge and on the inside between the vents and the body with holes drilled in the top flange of the vents so the badge holds the top and some double sided tape on the bottom......been there for 24 years with no problems ......I have removed them once for a re paint........very easy .....

sorry to hijack your thead but how has every one cut out there bodies to fit the vent as im a chippy i was going to use a router to remove most of the fibra glass then file finish to shape any real answers would help please rob |
The vents I have are slightly bigger than the opening in the body so the only finishing is to even up the lip so there's a flat surface for the vanes to butt up against. If that makes sense?

Same as Sambo, on the CR the body is already open out of the mould, the vents are slightly bigger so just needs a clean-up on the edges of the fibreglass.

Is there a particular type (number) of sikaflex for bonding fibreglass to aluminium and do we need to use the sikaflex primer?

From memory there is a sealant and a adhesive, use the adhesive and all I done was clean surfaces with oil and grease remover. 7 years, haven't moved. Cheers BJ |
