R32 Question
 
Hi
I'm under the assumption from the last owner of my car that it has an R32 rear end, however after seeing a post with pics from 400TT that Craigs' appears different to mine particularly where the diff bolts in to the chassis where I have 4 bolts and his 2.
I guess it's not really a big deal only it'd be nice to be sure as I've just ordered new R32 Nolathane bushes for all 4 corners of the rear end as one is completely shot with goop oozing out of it and the others quite perished.
Has anyone else needed to replace these, if so what with? Nissan weren't much help, claiming that they couldn't identify the bushes in their parts list. The Nolathane guys tell me that I need to either cut or burn the old ones out and install their bush in the original steel cup that retains the old one.
The other thing concerning me is the Avo shocky/spring combo doesn't sit centred in the swing arm assembly, in fact on one side the spring actually fouls on it. I have the car suspended on a cradle a few feet off the ground so the suspension is not under compression, is it reasonable to think that once the car's on the ground that the spring will reposition back into the centre of the arm? (it's a bugger to get on and off the cradle so just plonking it on the ground to see is real easy)

i work at a place that are very well know japanese imorters
both onwers have very hi performance r32 gtrs

one of them has one as a race car im not sure but he had similar problem with nolathane bushes

they are good but i dont think they last as much as factory rubber ones

this guy runs adjustable nismo arms thruoghout his race car

much better cause nismo arms still use rubber bushes but are stiffer than factory

u will find nolathane ones will always wear unevenly aswell

these guys get hard to find parts straight form japan
its easy for them sine they fly over to japan to the wrecking yard they work out of over there to see what to bring back

if u can post some pics i can show them ad they will know exactly what u have
as they sell parts for anything for performance japanese engines and parts

I cut back the bush until it was level with the frame and then made large washers for each corner and clamped the frame between them. Effectivly there are no bushes. I also made washers different thicknesses and used them to adjust the K frame when I was setting up the tailshaft angle.
If I was doing it again I would remove the bushes and weld in tubes and plates. I don't think NVH is a problem in a cobra.
Once the car is on its wheels you will find there is clearance around the springs.

Byron, ours is a R32 GTR rear end, it varies a lot from a standard R32 GTS-T rear that you have. As WKB well and truly knows. The GTR rear is also more difficult to fit, but has it's advantages. You will be fine with a GTS-T rear.

Those washers that WKB is talking about stop the bushes from ripping out, which has happened. So a very good insurance policy.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is NVH?
Sideshow, the rearend is at the sandblaster now so when it's back next week I'll send you a few pics for your guy to chase up, I'll put the Nolathane bushes on hold then consider my options I guess.

if u want ill ask the guy where i rent abit of floor space to run my shop from and se what bushes he recons

there is not much he doesnt know about kylines

Greg,
If you want to replace the bushes talk to a workshop that sets up skylines, 180sx's etc for drifting. They should be able tell you the best bushes to use and they will probably tell you to fit "pineapples"(machined aluminium rings that fit into either side of the bush). This will stop the K frame from moving and reduce the chance of the bush ripping.

While you have the rear end out of the car you should try to get a 3.7 to 1 diff from a manual 180sx. Just swap the drive shafts and back cover from the r32 gtst to 180sx diff and it will bolt staright in.
With this diff you will be able use 1st gear effectivly, get better fuel economy and be a lot quiter at highway speeds.

Warren, I'll also check out the Skyline forums for bushes. Re the diff, I'm running a 6 speed Tremec, so how should this influence first and top gears v's a 5 speed? Would the 180zx diff make a substantial difference?

Greg,
The best way to tell how it influences the way the car goes is to talk to someone who has changed the diff to a 3.7 to 1 ratio. If you are attending the next club meeting come and see me and I will introduce you to 2 members(one of them has a 6 speed and other one has a 5 speed)that just have done the conversion. I have the orange harrison so it should be easy to track me down.
