Has anyone ceramic coated their sidepipes white?
Just wondering if anyone has had their sidepipes coated white. If so, how well has it held up? Does it discolour or burn off? Have you had any trouble keeping them clean?
Andy. |
G'Day Andy,
I once had a set of tepe headers ( a tent-like set of pipes above the engine) on a v-dub aluminiumised. That was the white finish popular in the sixties. It tended to burn off any stains. One stain left a mark. One of my "mates" poured a beer on the hot pipes. It took a while to burn the brown stain off. I have had other pipes done with ceramic coating and I reckon they would hold up their "cleanliness" pretty well. The aluminiumised finish was a rough porus type of finish as opposed to the ceramic finish which is dead smooth |
My headers and inlet manifold are all coated (silver not white) holds up really well and does not stain or dis-colour.
Would highly recommend HPC above all other coaters. Love the racey look you get with white or black sidepipes. I had black pipes for a year before the car was painted the darker blue. Then I went for the chome look. |
There was a fairly recent thread about white ceramic. Just buy Duplicolor white ceramic rattlecans. Cheap and does a good job.

I was going to but the coater persuaded me not to go with white. It is the only color in ceramic to cost 1/3 more than the other colors, it has the lowest heat resistancy, and the lowest durability. I went with my #2 pick, bright silver/chome ceramic and love it.-John

I have white Swaintech pipes and love them. Outside pipe temp due to lower heat transfer is much less than stainless, cools rapidly. Increases hot gas evacuation signifigantly and decreases under-the-hood and footbox temps. This is a performance based coating and is rough to the touch.
Original ceramic color is dirty ivory-ish but was easily painted with ultra high temp white, also ceramic based. Touch-up is real easy. |
I did the same as bret. Swain tech and white vht paint. They look great and are easy to touch up if needed.

Hey guys,
Just from experience I can tell you that the Ceramic coating of silver is a joke. I have had my pipes redone three times because after a short time they start to discolor and fade especially nearer the engine. I also got to wondering about the less heat emmitted with having this coating. Well I took out my trusty thermo laser and checked both Duplicolor and HPC. There wasn't enough of a difference to make that claim as far as I was concerned. I use Duplicolor now and couldn't be happier. I carry a can with my clean up pack so I can easily touch up any areas. The great thing about this stuff is that when the headers get hot it bakes on and stays on. Save your money and buy $20 worth of Dupli-color and you will be happy. If you want super shiny then go Stainless steel. It would be cheaper in the long run. Stainless discolors a little around near the heads but still look good overall. One more thing .. I was told that my engine was the cause of the dicoloration. That's not what the Motec guy says so it was easy for me to make the cal and use the Dupli-color. OK .. I'm done now .. Gotta switch over to E-Trade and buy some stock in Dupli-Color.:3DSMILE: Hersh:) |

Hersh, You should know better by now. Don't you know that you should now open your threads with "Ged Day Mate" instead of "Hey Guys". Don't let it happen again.:LOL::LOL::LOL: Regards and take care now. Baz |
Baz, I rekon I forgot where I was I did. I'll watch me manners from here on. ;):3DSMILE:
Ged" day Mate ! Hersh:) |
G'Day,
I got the headers on my cousins 351 C mustang done with HPC silver and the tempreature drop in the engine bay was very obvoius. I had the treatment done both inside and outside. Rob. Smith |
HPC or Jet-Hot is a lot different than the Swain coating-performance wise. I will never use Jet-hot again.

hi, i had my pipes done in a chrome like ceramic and it ihad held up great. no discolor, no stains etc. good luck!
|
Tchrome. Are you in the business?
Just curious because of your forum name. It is intirely possible that I got bad service from the coaters and that they made excuses to cover their ass. But two different coaters and still the same outcome. I respect your your opinion and am very happy you are satisfied. That's what really matters. I apologize if my post made it sound as though you or anyone else waisted their money. That is not right. I can only say from what I have experienced. I personally enjoy telling folks about positive results so that they can make better decisions about what they want. Good luck and I hope those pipes stay shiney.:3DSMILE: Hersh:) |
no i am not in the business. just a name all my harley riding buddies gave me cause i had so much chrome on my bike.
|
tchrome, well you sure have some nice places to ride that Harley. I used to ride my XLCH all over the southern end. I really like getting on the putt and riding down the Keys. It was really something before those new bridges they now have.
I hope someday to take my Cobra down that way. I think the Cobra is basically a four wheel Harley.:3DSMILE: Hersh:) |
exactly my feelings! i ride a road king. andf i haver always said it is a cobra with 2 wheels. what kind of cobra do you have? i have an older NAF car (north american fiberglass) built originaly in 1988. but i have totaly rebuilt the car. i just bought a 427 center oiler with the 2x4 carbs and i will replace my 351 cleveland engine soon. good luck to you man, and keep the wheels on the ground.

Thanks Tony, I'll do it man.
Yeah the NAFs are good cobras. Jack Kubie still makes them but he is up in Superior Az now. He also makes a good looking Daytona. I believe he has a different company name now which I can't think of right now. I have a Midstates Cobra with a SBC in it. I built it in 1986. If you click that little camera under my avatar you can see it. I dunno Tony, with the price of gas you might rethink that swap.;):3DSMILE: Hersh:) |
