Both the Mill and the Lathe sold on eBay so I used that money to make a big dent in the purchase of a new Mill. I picked it up on Saturday and got it installed in the workshop over the weekend (that was an ordeal I dont soon want to repeat).

I just got it all cleaned up and running tonight. They come with a generous coating of grease to protect them from the elements and it takes some cleaning off.

I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. It's quite a bit bigger than my old mill and has some cool features. Really looking forward to machining some stuff on it.

That's basically my retirement sitting in the workshop. I reckon it was a far better investment than putting money into super at the moment. :(

It makes it a lot easier to justify when I think I'll be using it for the next 30 or 40 years (fingers crossed).

What a top machine...I haven't got the room for such so I bought a lathe-mill-drill from the US. It's reasonably big, not the model engineer size, it's done the job so far.
I can see hours of satisfaction coming out of that workshop. Nice poster too !

Both machines have replaced ones that I already had so I haven't used up too much extra space. It's probably taken up more of a footprint because I set the new mill a bit further away from the wall. I've found it's better to have some room to move around the machine for safety and comfort.


Rob, my first lathe was a combination Lathe Mill. It was great and I made a heap of stuff on it. I found after a while for the jobs I wanted to tackle that the Mill was a bit lacking on it. Not enough table or travel. I bought a geared head Mill Drill and that expanded my options. Then I saw the geared head lathe I had in the Trading post and took a look. It was good so I bought it and sold the lathe/mill combination machine.

One good thing about single phase hobby type machines is that they don't seem to loose their value. and there's a big market out there for them. I got close to what I paid for the Lathe/Mill and it was sold at 6:30AM the day the add came out. I owned it for about 3 or 4 years so it was machining for free.

The big Cincinnati milling machine came up a year later and I bought it and sold the Mill drill for about what I paid for it.

I have a lot more tied up in these 2 machines but the way steel prices and the exchange rate are going they will only be going up in price to replace.

If you've got the space I would highly reccomend to any automotive enthusiast to buy a Lathe and a Mill as well if you can justify it. They are lots of fun.

It's the BM30A but I had them swap out the 2 axis DRO for a 3 axis unit.

You probably wouldn't get much change out of $17K going by the current prices on the Hare and Forbes web page. http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/Home I did a bit better than that buying a package deal.

I already had a fair bit of tooling from my old machines but that would be an exta expense if you were setting up from scratch.

There are plenty of really good machines for less, it depends on what you want to do. The current crop of Taiwanese
machines are very accurate and that's one of the things I was after.
