T56 Reverse Lockout Necessary?
Hi Guys
I slipped the engine and box into the car the other day and the transmission fit is really tight. In fact the right hand side is in contact with the aluminium chassis lining. I recon if I remove the reverse lockout solenoid that it'll give me room to shift the box a little to the left thus giving relief to the contact problem. I'm running a Mustang 302 so the ECU won't miss the solenoid on the T56, is there a problem with doing without it? I've be driving manual boxes for years and have never thrown reverse whilst moving forwards!! Cheers |
The T56 has synchromesh for reverse gear like all the forward gears, I would not like to be doing a fast shift from 4th to 5th and get reverse by accident.
Keep the solenoid if you can is my advice. |
Not Nessary.
Hi Byron i had the same problem when i fitted a ls1 and t56 to a drb.
What i did was machined it down and fitted a heavy spring in place of the solinoid which worked a treat and now the solinoid is on my race cobra for reverse lock out on the hurst ratchet shifter thats why i never throw stuff out. Regards oz |
Thanks for your thoughts fellas
OZVENOM, you've lost me on the spring, why not just make up a plate to cover the hole? Whats the spring for? Greg |
Hey byroncobra,
you need the spring for a stop or resistance so you can't go into reverse while shifting into 5th. I understand your room problem, but you should really consider some kind of lock out,the plate and spring sounds like the best idea. |
I dont have the lockout fitted to my gearbox (yet).
I have driven it a fair bit now and am just very careful when shifting into 5th gear. I am not sure if it is just my gearbox or if they are all the same after moving the shifter, but the movement from 3rd to 5th is about 1/2 inch at the gearstick handle, so I do need to be careful. But I do plan to fit a solenoid. |
