MAF for 302
Hi guys
Any hints on where to go to get a MAF sensor to suit my Mustang 302. The engine is fitted with an after market "super performance" throttle body which is 84mm in diameter, I've spoken to local auto parts guys and a business named injectronics that can only supply Aussie 302 original parts with a 70mm throttle body connection. They're also not sure if theirs is compatible electronically. Cheers |
What ECU are you using.....you maybe able to go MAFless thats what i am doing.
|
You could call Petroject down here in Victoria, try asking for Danny on 03 9551 6222. Not sure if they can help but it's another contact.
There's another crowd working near Nunawading that I saw mentioned in another thread too that are good with injection. Someone might chime in with details. |
Thanks fellas
hsv.. It's the original Mustang ECU that Warrwick Harrison has cut down. The throttle body only has the throttle position indicator fitted. No EGR, whatever that is, or idle speed control solenoid (there is a plate covering over what maybe a place for this on the side of the throttle body) I have tracked down the manufacters website in the US (www.professional-products.com) and sent them an enquiry. They list a EGR plate that fits between the throttle body and manifold. Do I need this for EFi operation? How does the MAFless system work? Thanks heaps |
Wikipedia is your friend CLICK HERE
Some LS1 motors such as the VX..VY GTS ones where MAFless Cheers Greg |
not sure if the fords can go mafless
in terms of ls1s and stuff mafless is throw around like the rude word starting with f but with fords i dont htink so your better of asking a ford tuner i know of aplace in perth ill dig their info up anyway i played with a 302 mixture between us and aussie motor and electricals it all turned to **** cause u cant mix aussie electrical stuff with us electricals and stuff like i tell everyone who i do conversions for buy a complete kit might cost abit at the start but overall u might save anyway u need to find a ford wreckers in the us dont bother looking here or just go aftermarket ecu or ls1 hehehehehe |
Start looking at these....
http://www.cnlperformance.com/maf_86-93.html I run a 76mm C&L MAF with a 70mm BBK throttle body on a Trick Flow alloy headed 302 with standard bottom end. Runs a stage 1 cam and 1.6:1 roller rockers. Runs the bog standard EBGT EECV ecu for approx 270 ish rwhp. Second fastest street registered cobra at the Nationals 1.09.0. You don't need an LS1 to go fast..... i beat 'em all..... (that'll bring 'em out)haha I think maybe an 84mm throttle body on a 302 is a bit of overkill, unless it revs a lot more than mine. You don't need to run the EGR, you will have to keep the wiring hooked up. Just tuck it away under the dash. The EGR basically has coolant running through it to keep the throttle body hot to get a better burn for emissions. Which is the opposite of what you need for performance. It also allows Exhaust Gas to Return to burn again to ensure more fuel is burned... it is just an emissions thing. Best to be rid of it. You can buy an EGR plug from ebay is the states to plug into the loom to delete the egr. Just my 2 bobs worth.... Towmaster. |
Thanks fellas
It's staring to make some sense to me now. Great advice as usual.......it's fantastic that you guys that have moved on to completing your cars continue to support us blokes that are early into the steep learning process of building one. Greg |
Definitely a well sorted and well driven car Towmaster.
Imagine what you could do with a light LS engine! From memory you have a chev in the driveway already... Ben |
ok, so EGR and the plate it mounts on are not needed for operation. make sure that the harness you are using or the computer has been told there is no EGR.
MAFs are co-calibrated to run with a particular injector rating 19lb,24,lb,30lb. your motor-sport supplier locally should be able to help you ID your injectors and suggest a MAF. also keep in mind to RUN A PCV, this helps reduce acids from unburned fuel in the crank case oil. Steve |

Did have an LS1 in the driveway, VUSS was the towcar.... until i found out it was only legal to tow 1200kg.... Very sad day when i sold that ute!!! Now have a v6 adventra which tows 2500kg and cruises on 120k with the trailer etc on board. Thinking of a vortech to give it a little boost.... How long u thinking of keeping the silencer on yours?? saw it at the nats and thought the NSW RTA are going to great lengths for a couple of cars.... |
Sidepipes are now on, so it is much nicer to drive. A couple of rattles seem to have dissapeared now too!
I am still running the standard tune, so it is not too quick yet. After xmas I will get it on the dyno and see if we can get 275 rwkW with the stock engine - I might need to get a cam from Boxhead. Cheers, Ben http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...745_Small_.JPG |
Might be easiest to try to go back to a stock setup for the time being if you need to get through rego etc. As Panavia said, Ford MAFs are specific to the size of injectors used. On EEC4 computers I understood it to be a straight forward swap to change your injectors and correspondingly matched MAF. EEC5 computers don't like mods. So check your computer type first. If its EEC5 then I think it would be much easier to keep it all stock. Then you'll have a cobra that runs fine and you can sort out what mods you want to do later.

i dont understand y people buy bits of an engine
there are heaps of jap importers around and people buy the cheapest option but dont get everything problem is trying to source some bits that are hard to find can get expensive i tell everyone pay bit more and get a complete set then u know it should all work fine if everything is installed correctly the only time i would only buy just the enigne and not all electricals is when u plan to go full aftermarket now if rego is very strict then u need to run std ecu and everything else matching should be std and of same set cause even on a std ecu its hard to pass rego if rego is not very strict then go full aftermarket dont fuk round with chasing air flow meters and **** if u plan to run bigger throttlebodies and crap then go aftermarket but make sure the tuner knows how to tune the car to pass rego anyway not many people in australia will have a maf for you yr best bet is to find a salvage yard in the usa and buy one of them what is the number on yr ecu with that number you can find what model car its off then find a place thats knows what they are talking bout and see what they can do asking in australia wont get u far u need connections in usa if u want i can chase one for u thru my connections in the usa but i need all info u have and your ecu number and ioll come back with a price sorry i cant give out any contact info after the last debarcle that happened on here |
Greg,
Did you contact the guy (John) at American Imports? He sources complete motors for Cobras and Daytonas and found me a part that I had missing on my 302. See: http://www.123engines.com/engines/?page_id=2 Merv |
Looks like I've found the bits i need thanks, via ebay US.
The maf is aftermarket, it actually came off an identical throttle body and engine f/w 19lb injectors plus same ECU so it should work OK%/ I hear you sideshow, however i purchased the engine from a local guy who has built numerous Cobras after Warrick Harrisons recommendation. He had the engine stripped back, tricked up and 6 speed fitted by a very well known speedshop in QLD. It has the original engine loom and ECU and is not a cheap Jap import:) The only bits that I require to complete the setup is the maf and throttle air control solenoid. I'm guessing that he had his own ideas as to how he was going to set the efi up but as he decided to not complete the carbuild and I'm a bit green on this caper, I'm a little on the dark. Anyway thanks for the tips..........I've spoken to the engineer and he seems happy with the proposed setup. Hopefully it'll all work OK. |
Well done,
youve been lucky to get out of that mess. Regards. |

I know it must be frustrating to you with all the requests tofix problems, but most of these guys here don't have the benifit of the experience and hindsight of someone in the trade like yourself to realise, unlike the old days of mix n match, that today 'this only goes with that'. They might buy an unfinished project, but unwitingly inherit someones mistakes. Again if you aren't in the know, it is hard to resist a 'great bargain'. I've been in the trade for 32 yrs and are'nt up to speed with all aspects of EFI. On another matter, I was talking to Chic Henry the other week and he is most impresed with your work and the wiring system you installed in the Camaro. |
