The Pod

I put up a thread a while back showing the pod frame, here it is completed.

It means I don't have to use shed space for the car and gives added security - no doors.

At present it is key operated but will be also be operated from the car when I get around to building a transmitter interface.

The power is from a 600kg capacity 12V winch with pulleys to multiply its capacity and a suspension spring system as a counterweight. The battery for this is topped up from solar power and hasn't needed charging yet.

Looks great. Nice bit of engineering.

I reckon you need to add the sound track from 2001 where the ship docks with the space station. :p

Cheers

Awesome idea! You should rig something up so you can lock the "pod" down.

Doug

There is a powered latch which clamps the 2 halves of the clamshell together when the pod closes. It releases when power is applied to the main motor.

The pod is also connected into the house alarm system, a PIR detector in the pod is activated when the pod is closed.

Nice job. How hot does it get in there ? There's a bloke up here that used to throw a tarp over his cobra and park his 4wd in front of it. The yard had no front fence either. How's that for security. I think he's build a shed now.

The roof is perspex with 20% light transmission so the roof itself dosent get hot but the walls are metal. The other day it was 42C here and the maxmin thermometer read 48. Other than that it has never felt hot inside. There is a 100mm gap all round at the perimeter to aid air circulation but it also lets leaves & dust in so I will have to rethink, perhaps fine mesh there.

That's great - I really like the idea

...But I can't help but get this vision of the would be car thief spotting a cobra in the driveway - he heads down with the intention of making off with it only to find himself swallowed up.

either is good...
