T56 Conversion
I'm looking for a gearbox specialist in/or around Sydney who can do a gearstick conversion. ie: move stick from rear position to front position.
I am aware of Mal Woods (reputation) in Queensland but am hoping to avoid packaging up my g'box to send that far. Would possibly like to have a Quickshifter fitted at the same time. Any advice on the above would be much appreciated dennis |
Mal Wood is really good, I think it is worth the transport costs.
Bear in mind that it is not easy to remove the gearbox again if anything goes wrong! Ben |

There is plenty of guys who have done the mod themselves and its quite possible for someone with some basic engineering ability. There was a thread dedicated to this sometime back which might be worth searching for. In my view after the mod when the shifter is moved forward this improves the shifting movement greatly as it no longer goes thru a linkage system therefore shortening the shift distances and creating its own quickshift movement. I did mine as per the instructions on this website, was a little scary making the first cut but all worked out in the end.
I did not fit the reverse lock out part but would do so in the future as when trying to shift quickly you find yourself going a little slower than you could due to fear of finding reverse. I actualy have my selector out at the moment getting the reverse lockout working. |

Good advice as I know MW's reputation from this forum but transport costs really wasn't the issue. I have a young friend who was building a drag car (LJ Torana) who sent an expensive auto tranny to somebody in Adelaide for mods, long story short...badly damaged bellhousing and crate on return...transport company denied liability...insurance company procrastinated over payment... seventeen weeks later satisfaction. Dennis - If your close to me Im happy for you to pop around and Ill pull the shifter off mine to show you what is involved. Did mine 18 months ago now and it is still going strong. I might even drive it soon to see if it works :). Im in South West Sydney.
I think the Mal wood conversion reuses\modifies the commodore shifter to relocate to the forward hatch, where the Murphy Style mod uses a really nice B and M shifter. |

thanks for your replies. I've just had another look at the thread re, Aussie Mikes conversion and it may be an option as I have an engineering background. Leeroy, the quickshift or shorter stick movement sounds good as I have a ****ie L/shoulder and had originally ordered a 6sp tiptronic but after reading Baz,s posts and talking to Neil Streeting I bailed out and took the manual box instead (chicken). Boxhead, keep me posted on your reverse lockout mods if you don't mind. Thanks guys dennis |
I'm not sure how far you want to move it, but I took a shifter from a 2005 GTO (Holden something out there), cut it in half, made a very simple mounting bracket, and extended the connector to the right length. You can move it just about as far forward as you like. In the process, I also reduced the throw a bit.

You mention some machining is required which concerns me as I no longer have access to a mill or a machine shop but I'm working on it Dennis |
