L76 & E38 Tacho issue
Just a quick message regarding the tacho issue. I discovered the E38 ECU requires a load on the tacho output before it will output any signal, damn clever these puters(no load sensed no output). I found this out after trying to scope the signal to see what magnitude the signal was in order to amplify it to drive my Classic instruments tacho. All I saw with the bitscope(very handy toy) was noise at first I thought I had an Ac signal of about 200mv peak to peak, but figured that can't be right seeing as the tune was set for a crank pulse output.The fix was a 680 ohm resistor from the 12v input to the signal terminal.
Maybe this will get someone in or out of trouble. Lionel. |

Nothing like making a discovery on your own. I wasn't to keen on putting in the pull up resistor would have preferred something more fancy but this works well. Next issue to tackle is the charge warning light.
Any hints sideshow?? Lionel. |
whats wrong with the charge light
its just 12vs ign in and other end to alternator just make sure u dont use gay asss leds for charge lights as they will stay on and u have tio run a resistor between to the wires or put another normal globe between the 2 wires hidden behind the dash |
lionel - what type of alternator you running as the LS1 style and the L76\L98 type have different connections.

I am running the L76/98 altenator. The altenator is charging but i need to work out a simple way to make the warning light work. In the commodores it is turned on by serial data from the BCM which I am not using. Lionel. |

I used an Ls1 alternator which was a bit easier to wire up I think (although I got it wonrg first time too :)).
For the L76 I think one wire should go to the light and one to a pin on the ecu. |

Thats what I thought but ECU doesn't seem to drive the bulb on when no charge, but altenator charges when engine running. To truely mess up a good system add a computer. |
Lionel - found my working out (all care - no responsibility).
The grey wire from the alternator should go to the existing x2 pin 32 (Stays as is in the harness from holden). Remove the orange wire from the x2 connector (it goes to pin 61) and wire to the ground side of the warning light (+12 on the other side)........I THINK :) |

was thinking that could be the case I was hoping to keep the ECU involved but may not be able to without BCM. I could always do without warning light until I think up another devious way of making it work. Sideshow, Wired up wrong?? I guess I am just used to altenators that are 4ft round and weigh in at 7 tonnes, these little fellas can be tricky. Lionel. |
