Importing and registration.
A general question that the vast knowledge in here someone might know the answer to?
One of my good mates here in Alice has a mate who is the head chef at one of the larger motel facilities in Dubai (he has 4 Michelin star chefs under him), He is looking to purchase a 2010 Camaro while he is in Dubai (he currently lives there and will be there for some time yet). He wanted to know what is the go in so far as bringing it back to Australia when he does return? Will he need to convert to R/H drive? Or is there an exemption if you have owned the car for X time period whilst living overseas? When he comes home he will most likely return to Adelaide, if that makes any difference? I told my mate he is best to get in contact with either Australian customs or the Adelaide MVR. |
I am probably wrong but I believe if the car is 30 years old no conversion req! If younger than that....conversion required. But I dunno much...

Hi Boxhead
He should be able to bring it in as a personel import and leave it LHD as long as he has owned it for over 1 year i think regards Paul |
Hi there Spook, I know about the 30 year old rule, thanks for the info though.
Paul, That is where I think he will be ok, I had heard something along these lines aswell, He will definatly own the vehicle for more than 12 months before bringing it home, That was why I suggested he email the SA MVR. They will either confirm or deny this part of the question. I am glad someone else has heard this, it makes me think I was not thinking wrong. |
Not an expert, but did this a few years ago, He must have owned "AND driven" it for 12 months for a personal import, his passport entries must confrim he was in that country with the car for that 12 month period.
Rgds Terry. :) |
From what I know he will be able to tick the box for both owning and driving for more than 12 monthes in that country.
