What makes up a 347?
Can someone tell me what makes up a 347?
Windor or Clevland Stroked 302 or destroked 351 Cleavo heads on windsor block.... I know nothing...... Please explain to the layman.......%/ SpookyPT |

If you aren't a subscriber to Fordmuscle you'll only get the first page (or that's what happened to me anyway)
the 347 (5.7l) is usually a 302 windsor with a .030 overbore and a 3.4in stroke the 250kw windsors that ford had in the AUs were 342s i.e. std bore with the same stroke crank. the 331 (5.4l) is usually a 302 windsor with a .030 overbore and 3.25in stroke (without the overbore it is a 327) However - the 'new' boss 302 block can go to 347 with a 3.25in stroke by being able to be bored .125 over (from memory) I have read that the cylinder sleves in the boss 302* are not long enough to accomodate the 3.4in stroke and that this is also the case with some early 289s (have no experience of this) Boss302 was a special racing block that had 'tunnel port' heads/4 bolt mains etc the new Boss302 block is basically set up to build a Clevor (Cleveland heads/Windsor block) Hope this helps LoBelly |
Careful on the selection of 347 pistons , - sometimes depending on rod selection , the oil ring will intersect with the piston pin hole, and the motor will consume more oil than really needed. my personal preference is for a 326-331. Stock 4.00" bore to 4.030" and a 3.2" stroke. -- plenty of juice.
if you are more of a juice monkey, then you probably should be in a 351W Block -where you can go 402-408 with no big problems. Steve. |
Les has convinced me on the 331 as it seems to be more 'square' (?) and thus a smoother, more revvy motor (all other things being considered of course).

Nice one Steve. You just saved me from having to type my reply, as I was going to say exactly what you did.
Go for a bit more deck height, and you will be rewarded with greater performance and strength in a 351W based combo. Quote:
