gas strut hood lift

Has anyone used gas struts as for a hood lift instead of a prop rod? If so can you include details?
Are there any reasons not to use these?

Thanks, Jim

I use the props on my hood and my trunk, works very nice and looks good too, very functional, not hard to do, you can buy the props them selves at most auto stores, and you can make the brackets very easy. You could call around to the cobra dealers and some will have a kit that will work for you, but you will pay for it.

I use them too. Mounting hardware was from a junked Pinto "Pony" hatchback and the rods were from http://www.mcmaster.com/. Stay around 20 lb lift or less and get the same length as your prop rod.

Try this one. It gives the part numbers and everything. I know a guy that put them on his B&B. He didn't put the backing brace inside the hood though.

I put gas struts on my hood a few weeks ago. Went with two, 30# and they are working out real well. (My NAF hood is very stout) NAPA had a selection of mounting brackets that also worked out fine. One thing we ran into was to make sure the strut is not totally verticle, when extended. They must be slightly at an angle towards the direction you want them to pivot down to.

I have them on mine too. Got them from McMaster Carr.

Hi Guys,

Here is a link to a company that sell all sizes of gas struts. I needed one for my boat and bought it from these guys.

I have a West Coast Cobra and I just returned mine, they were so strong that my body shop guy was afraid that the hood would crack. I do have trunk sliders and they are nice. I am having the hood prop done in stailess steel.
