Simple Trunk Stay

For those that are building their cars I want to share with you a simple and effective trunk stay I made that a friend named Todd here in Utah showed me. The bracket was made of a scrap piece of 1/8" angle iron bolted to the back side of the trunk hinge. A hole is drilled in the hinge arm that the pin slides into. The holding device is an L handle spring plunger. To lock you flip the spring loaded lever so it slides in the grove. To unlock you pull the handle and turn the lever. The plunger pin I used I think was a 1/4". I may make one for the hood, but it's closer to the radiator. I got the stainless plunger from Reid Supply, 11.79 ea. I think Northwestern is the manufacturer, part #33934, but you have to order it from Ried Supply.

I added a 1/8" piece of steel welded to the hinge arm and ground for a ramp because as the arm moved through it's arch it was to close to the plunger. Each hinge might be different. I tacked welded the nut on the back side.

If you like fabricating things this may be for you. It works great.

ADDED FOR CLARIFICATION
In the locked position the spring plunger mounted on the bracket goes through a hole in the hinge arm locking the trunk lid in the up position. When you pull the plunger lever the pin comes out of the hinge arm allowing it to drop to close the trunk

Very creative Wayne. I like it.

Looks creative!
One question I have is does it not put a stain on the mount for the trunk hinge which will create stress on the fiber glass?

I was wondering if you thought drilling a hole in the hinge for the pin instead of the ramp would work? Trying to not have to tear down and repaint the hinge
thanks, Jim

Larry, I thought about that but it seems to just lock it all together.

Jim, there is a hole in the hinge arm. It goes though the 1/8" and then the arm. I really didn't want to add the 1/8" but as the arm came down when closing in it's arc, it came to close and would have bound up on the bracket. The spring pin extends only 1/4" so I needed that 1/8" to engage the pin. Another car may not need it at all. Todd, the guy that showed me the system did not have to add anything to his car. It depends if the arm moves perfectly straight in it's arc.

I am still evaluating doing it on the front. I have some ideas to move it away from the radiator that may work.

it seems like the hood has a lot more weight and leverage to be held by this method, but let me know if you have success. are you looking to us just one pin?
thanks, jim

Jim, that is true, however the good thing about this hinge design is that when the hood is fully open there is no down weight on it. When fully open it is slightly past center to the front. When I was building my car I left the hood open for weeks in the shop without any support. It would seem any force to close it would be from the wind. I am still evaluating.

This is a picture of Todd's Hood Stay. Notice, he has his radiator mounted forward out of the way.

Interesting.

Problem is when a big gust of wind hits that open hood, what happens then?
