Location of Fuel Pressure Regulator
I am having problems with too high of fuel pressure with my mechanical pump. My options are either buy an Edelbrock pump that is set at 6 lbs. max or add a fuel pressure regulator.
For those with a B&B, if you have a regulator with a mechanical pump where did you locate the regulator. Pictures would be nice. Thanks. |
If you install a regulator, it needs to be as close to the carb as possible. Use a mounting plate like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-210250r/overview/
Personally, I would install a new regulated pump, and skip the regulator. Fewer components, and less opportunity for things to go wrong. |
What pressure are you seeing 8+lbs? In lieu of regulator the diaphram/spring assy in many rebuildable pumps can be changed to one with 4-6lbs which a Holley will easily control.

Long story guys that started with my wide band 02 sensor. Man I want to tell this story but just don't have the time to write it now. In summary went through three pumps, all claimed a max of 6.5 lbs. When I installed them and checked the pressure they were 8 lbs. I learned always check the manufacturers website to confirm the max pressure no matter what the retailer advertises. I found one brand that has a consistent problem with the pressure being 1.5 lbs. more that their specs say. I have been on the phone with their tech support and they are concerned. Seems to be a production problem.
So, I installed an new quick fuel carb last night and they set the floats up with 6.5 lbs. and run it on an engine before shipping. I put on another new fuel pump that said 6.5 max pressure and checked it when started with two gauges. It was 8 lbs. Float level was way high. Seems the only solution is to put on a regulator. |
I used to run a mechanical pump with a regulator, and the location of the regulator was on the driver's side aluminum panel toward the front of the car, near the top of the front suspension. I use an Aeromotive regulator and its been solid. BTW, all of the fuel lines are AN -8 except the ones that go from the regulator to the carb, which are AN -6.
Recently I converted to an electrical pump, so I now have a bypass regulator at the pump (behind rear driver's side wheel) that splits the fuel feed between the line that goes to the front of the car, and the return line to the fuel tank. That regulator is a Weldon, like the pump. I set the rear regulator at 12 PSI, and knock the pressure down to 6 PSI with the front regulator. Seems to work perfectly, although I only have 200mi on this setup. |
