gas tank leak
My B&B was built in '00 and was supplied with a new gas tank.
It is leaking around the sending unit. Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do about it? (I tried just tightening the screws around the seal, but that didn't work). |
I hope there is a rubber gasket between your sending unit and the tank?

I would drain the tank until you can fix it. Since these cars are always garaged the fume build can cause big problem that will ruin you whole day. And your garage.
Is this something new??? maybe it always did and the fumes weren't as bad? I would definitely go with the gasket first and make sure that is seats properly. |
Yes, there's a gasket. I haven't had a chance to empty the tank yet so I can pull everything apart (of course, I noticed the problem after I filled the tank!)
I called Darrell at B&B. He is sending me a new unit and also suggested a little silicone around the seal. Thanks, Cobra Curt |
Had this same problem with my Unique. It makes for a smelly trunk. Solved the problem. When the sending unit was mounted, the several mounting screw holes had "puckered" up. The gasket was not able to do it's job. Had to empty the tank, remove the sending unit, carefully place secure tape INSIDE the opening to prevent anything going in, flat filed the "puckers" on all screw holes, carefully removed the tape, replaced the gasket, fixed!
Before you re-gasket or sealer, make sure the screw holes are flush with the surface of the tank. |
Before doing any such work on a gas tank..
Be sure the tank is drained, and DRY. Vapors combined with sparks from filing/tool work, can give you one mondo blast, ruin your cobra and your day, maybe even kill the repairman.
The best way is to fill the tank with water as welders do, but for this type of work that seems impractical? Be SURE the tank is DRY by leaving the sending unit hole open for a day or two, AFTER draining the tank completely.
