Removing Dash

I am sending the body off for paint soon, and need to remove the dash. What is the best way to remove the stock steering column. If possible, I would like to just remove the two large sleeves that are holding the dash in, and leave the inner shaft alone. I removed the C clip that holds the beering in place, thinking that if I got the bearing out, I could then slide the first peice off, and as I remember, there are only 3 small screws holding the other part on. Yes, I have removed the horn/turn signal portion, and have loosened the two nuts that draw the outer ring in. It still feels as if I am trying to pull that inner shaft out.

Any ideas?

Tom

Tom,

The only thing I can think of is the shaft itself. As you know it goes all the way through the steering column and down to the rack and pinion. If you remove the two bolts and nuts where the steering column attaches to the short shaft that comes out of the rack you can pull the shaft back through the inside of the car (you also need to loosen the bearing on the left side of the frame that stabilizes the steering rod).

Good luck!

Clois
