LS1 and Corvette 6-Sp Tranny?
 
just wondering if the corvette manual trans will fit in the b&b cobra. i have been to the plant a while ago and got to sit in the driver but it was up for service that was all i got to do. just wondering since it is shorter will it place the shifter farther forward to alleviate the long bent shifter for a short straight one. also do i need to use the vet tube drive train or can i use a reg one? found several in salvage sites and ebay listings. this will be my first build so i need some experience advise. thanks

The problem you may run into with the Corvette LS1 is the clearance between the rails. The Corvette has large wings sticking out the sides of the sump that may hit on your chassis rails. I know they don't fit between the rails of a Superformance without some cutting and welding.

The best option is the Camaro/Firebird LS1 or LS6 and T56. Internally they are exactly the same as the Corvette. The Z06 has some head work done on it to make the extra HP but you can easily make the same kind of HP with a stock LS1 and a good exhaust, Cold air intake and careful dyno tuning.

Shifter location isn't a problem There are a few different shifters avilable for the T56. Or you can modify your box to move the shifter forward like mine.

There are a lot of LS1 powered Cobras down here now and their performance potential is awesome.

What kind of things did you have to by pass as far as the computer goes? Did you have to reprogram or make any "fake" sensors (resistors to simulate a sensor etc.)? What did you do as far as the fuel return line? and did you have any problems with the alternator fitting? I just got my engine in and I'm preparing to install it, I think the hardest part is going to be figuring out the computer (pinouts and where they go). I just ordered the factory service manual for it today so that should help. Also, did you use the stock master cylinder for the clutch?

Your best option is to source a factory engine loom and ECU. Find a tuning shop that has LS1 Edit software and get them to disable the VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System) in the ECU. VATS makes the ECU talk to the BCM (Body Control Module) and verify all the codes match, it's even tied into the ignition key. They can usually mod it so you don't need the BCM at all and the motor will just run with the ECU. The factory Delphi ECU is fully tunable using LS1 Edit so there is no need to use an after market ECU. Check out some of the LS1 forums to learn some more.

I'm not sure what the clutch set up is on your car. I'm using after market master cylinders and I'll need a larger master cylinder to suit the hydraulic throwout. I think 3/4" is the size I need to run.

Thanks Mike. I already have the factory ECU and BCM with the key so I know how to bypass the VATS. I'm thinking of getting LS1 edit but if i don't need to I'd rather not ($$$). I own a 99 Camaro Z28 so I'm familiar with all the LS1 boards. Thanks for the Info.

We have the 6 speed in our Cobra, and used the LS1 & trans from an Fbody.

This is some good information but just to confirm I'm going to ask another question. From what I understand the T56 can fit in the B&B with no problems. Is there any modifications that need to be done to make it fit? And where is the shifter located? (farther forward or farther back) And my last question is can you use a T56 with a 302. Somebody mentioned using a lakewood scattersheild to make the conversion between the two. If anybody has some info please let me know before I spend all of my money on a 5 speed. Once again I wouldn't be doing it without you guys.
