Steering

Drove the cobra for the first time today. Had an issue with the throttle and the trans. The steering leaves a lot to be desired, particularly if I am going to use this car on the track. I think I have a little adjustment room, but I do not think it is going to help much. Does the IDIDIT upgrade much of a difference? Can the IDIDIT be retrofit into a nearly completed car? Any other setups out there?

On a similar topic, has anyone used the adjustable control arms from Pole Position? Contemplating adding those.

Flaming river 15 to 1 rack

Adjustable Control Arms may be needed to get your caster where you want it.

What is the part number for the 15:1 rack for a 5.0 doner? Do you just use the newer model?

Steering rack

I understand you can buy a manual steering rack (late 70's mustang I think, not sure of the year) from autozone for a fair price. That is suppose to be close to a Flamming River?
Just a thought

me too

OhBouy

Just replace my original rebuilt steering column with a IDIDIT. Steering still SUCKS!!! Mine works fine for about 3 miles of driving, then it starts sticking and I have to use force to get it back to center. Each time I test drive it does the same thing.(Starts out fine then goes to hell) I think its in the rack and pinion and not the column. All the u-joints and ball joints check out fine. Is there anyway to adjust the rack and pinion.

Use the later 5.0 rack (88-93), if your crossmember is drilled for Mustang II you will need offset bushings.

What exactly is your steering problem? I bought a Mustang II rack from Auto Zone. I don't have any problems. Jim

Hey Jim, do you have any documentation that came with your mustang II rack. If so, could you e-mail or fax me a copy if its not to much trouble. Went to pepboys and they were sold out of the chilton manual for a mustang II.

I'm working 12 hour nights this week. I'll have to check tomorrow. I have the original box in my garage or shed. Jim

No rush, Im having trouble finding free time myself.

Thanks again

Sorry but nothing in the box but the old rack I never returned for the core charge. Jim

kajun 03-04-2004 09:38 PM

No problem Jim, thanks for looking. My father-in-law has restored several mercury cougars and is coming over tomorrow to take a look. If this guy can't fix it, it can't be fixed! He is WI too.

Thanks,
Dean

problem solved

It was the angle of the middle u-joint. Just barely touching it would heat up and start binding after driving for awhile. We loosened the column and backed it out about 1/8 or so. It steers like it has power steering now. Ohbouy, you may want to check this before you start replacing parts. Jack up the front and turn the steering wheel untill it gets to a tight spot. Then work the wheel back and fouth in an inch segment. Mine went from just alittle tight spot to a loud squeak that made the dogs go crazy.

Hope this helps,
Kajun

Oh Bouy,
I the column is the issue Enzo makes a custom column. He started making these because he was not happy with the Ididit in his E-M.
Give him a call.
