Another Oil Pan Question

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out which oil pan to run. I am running the oil cooler which will obviosly add more oil to the system. If I am running a stock oil pan with an oil cooler should I run a high volume pump or a stock pump. Is this a bad idea completely? and last but not least how many quarts of oil does the oil cooler add to the oil system. Oh yeah and are you guys running front or rear sump pans. Thanks for all of the help so far.

1. The number of quarts is directly proportional to the area added with the cooler. Put in half a quart and run the engine. Let it sit and read the stick. Add as required.

2. The type of pump should be dictated by the engine, not the oil pan. If you are running higher RPMs and need more oil to protect the engine, by all means, add the HVHP pump.

3. Oil that is too cool is not necessarily a good thing. You may want a thermal valve that opens when the oil reaches a certain tamperature, like 200 degrees ( or whatever ).

Just my $0.02

You need to tell us what engine you have. For instance a stock pan on a FE engine will be sucked up by a high volume pump at high rpm acceleration, other engines will do the same. That's why most folks are running 7 quart pans (8 qt systems).

trularin and rick,

I'm running a 302. Nothing crazy. Probably a little over 300 horse. Also are you guys running a front or rear sump pan. To be honest I'm just trying to get the car done on a budget and some of these aftermarket oil pans and pickups are pretty expensive. If I can run something stock without worrying about damaging the motor then I will probably do it. If there is any question at all about it being unsafe to the motor then I will buy a different pan and pump. What do you guys think?
