Gas gauge

anybody get the stock gauge to work properly?

OhBuoy 07-13-2006 03:12 PM

Your joking, right? It is not the guage so much as it is the sender. I went with a tube type sender, but that is even problematic. I saw another tube type that seems better, and was mentioned here. It can be trimmed to length.

Stock sender is a piece of crap. I have the tube sender as well but it does not work that great either.

OhBuoy maybe we should try the other tube sender? Do you have the website????

I always top off the tank every 100 miles so far that works as the best gas gauge!

pmfranke 07-15-2006 12:51 AM

yes , sender . I guess the answer is no.what is the other sender ? So another 75 bucks or so ?

I bought a sender from Centroid Products. I can't say how well it works... my car isn't running yet. From what I was reading about the stock sender, I was sure that I would've been disappointed. This sender is a tube type with no moving parts. I bought the 6" version and it sits about 5/8" off the bottom of the tank. I think I paid $52 which included the shipping. Here's the website...

500 miles with the stock sender and still working fine. my only problem is filling the tank all the way full. I dont want gas to run out the vent tube. Now when I picked my kit up, Ron did something to my sender and he said he was fixing it so that it would work right. he was bending the angle of the float.

Boris, what model did you get? I think I might add this to the long list of winter upgrades. I have also considered upgrading my guages at some point to get an oil temp guage.

OHM Rating

I just got this info from Faria regarding the Ohm rating of the fuel gauge.

I wonder if the sender we both bought had the incorrect ohm rating??? and therefore inaccurate.

From Faria
The ohms are 240 at E to 33 at F That is a Stewart Warner and standard marine spec

P.S. I think we had the correct Ohm rating.

Actually, I hate to say this so I don't jinx it, but after trouble with the original and the "tube type" sender, I bought the Auto Meter 3262 Univ Fuel Level Sender and it seems to be working well. I found the best price at Amazon.com. When I fill the tank, I get a gas smell in the trunk for a while. I think it's from the vent but the sending unit is one I would recommend for the time being.

Thanks for the input. Amazon actually beats Summit's price by about 5 bucks.

boris_thespider 07-17-2006 02:33 PM

Here's the description of the sender I purchased:
CGF-6-12V-240/33-FARIA-2 TERM GAS-5 HOLE 1/2" TUBE

For an extra $15, you can have electronic damping built into the circuitry. I was going to pay the $15... but they talked me out of it. They said their senders are made for marine and RV fuel tanks that have large amounts of fuel slosh. They didn't think I'd have any problems with my B&B tank. I hope they're right :o

You could always but a Smith's gauge that they use in Superformance. Mine is only off by 1/4 tank
