Gas cap gaskets
I made a die cut die to cut out some gaskets for the gas cap. Pics in my gallery. I wonder if you need a hole in the recess to drain the gas cap area?
It looks as if it will catch fluids, water or gas?

Your right foot will quickly drain any fluids that collect in that area :)

B&B guys say they use silicone to seal the gas cap flange not a gasket??

Any leakage would end up in the trunk area (not good). Your idea of a gasket is good if the mating area is actually flat, otherwise the silicone may be the correct sealer.

When I bought my first cobra I had a recurring problem of the car would run out of gas(even though it had gas in the tank) you could wait a few minutes and it would start and run fine for maybe a mile and quit again. I changed fuel filters three times and then pulled the tank. Guess what I found in the suction tube of the tank?, a chunk of silicone, It was acting like a check valve, occasionally letting some gas by in small increments. I would advise against putting silicone anywhere near where you put in gas. My .02

dont use silicone around gas,it doesnt stick.use "seal all",its gas resistant.you can get "seal all "from walmart.under 3 bucks

Hello all, this is my first post to go along with my first Cobra. I purchased a well done B&B that I love. Wow what a solid car. One of the first things I noticed was fuel leaking down the back of the decklid even on moderate accelaration and cornering. I soon discovered the problem was the two piece filler neck design. This was never intended to seal fuel in. The base is for vehicles with existing sealing gas caps as a cover only. I purchased a beautifull one piece base from Finish Line only to discover on arrival the threads do not fit the existing cap assembly. I ordered the matching cap with great results. You will discover you can get it with or without a locking gas cap. Don't forget to get the mounting kit. You'll need it. No more leaks and a very cool looking part. I look forward to much fun and more posts!!!!

My personal opinion is gaskets look better than 'no gasket'.
It looks like you forgot something. Plus it is easy for me because I was a die cut diemaker for 40 years. I used a gasoline resistant, thick rubber to make the gasket, so even if there are imperfections, it will seal it. Plus just that faint edge of the gasket is appearant which as I said, I like!
One more of the little things that make kit cars so interesting is the touches each individual puts into their one 'honey'.

If I understand you correctly you made a one piece gasket to bridge the gap between the two pieces that make up the base. Great Idea!! Sounds like it will seal. As you stated it's the little personal touches that make these cars so interesting. I still think the one piece base is better because it doesn't allow any fuel to contact any mounting screws or surfaces and looks great. Have you seen the Finish Line product I described? By the way your build pics look great. What a gorgeous car! How did you get past the 5 degree forward angle at the carb base on your manifold. I have yet to find a dual plane unit with a level mounting surface. Have you heard of anybody milling the manifold to level the carb mount? Thanks for your help!!

The manifold is a Victor Jr dual plane. The carb is a 4150 Holley (manual choke and mechanical secondaries). It leveled itself when I had to shim the transmission mount down some.
