Registering a Backdraft in NC
When registering a Backdraft in NC, Do they consider it a 1965 or the year purchased from Backdraft? Where do they get the value for Taxes? The DMV said “bring me the paperwork and we will see”

The car will be registered as the year it was built/purchased--not as a 1965.
Is it a new or used car?
In terms of value for taxes, they will likely ask for receipts as well as an appraisal.
Good luck--it can be a painful process.

Thanks, Im looking at preused :LOL: I went to the DMV to ask a couple questions and find out what i will need. Not much luck. All I got was "brink the title in and we will look at it" Standing in line at the DVM is like going to WalMart. You see some strang people.:JEKYLHYDE

That's not true. Actually none of what you said is true.
With the new laws in NC it is important that you have all of your ducks in a row when going to register ANY car that is purchased out of state. I recently brought a BDR 65 Cobra into the State. It required it to be trailered to the license and theft bureau and they ran the VIN and took pics of the car and the VIN. They then gave me the proper paper work that I took to the License and Tag Dept. They have no clue about the new laws there so I suggest that you take the Statute with you. If you need it and can't find it send me an email.
Needless to say my title says 1965 Cobra Replica.....

The points that I made were valid and based on my personal experience in registering a CSX 4000 car in 2007 in Wake County (the car was new and had not been titled). Given what was shared in the original post it wasn't clear if the Backdraft was a new or used car.:rolleyes:
It sounds like you had a different experience in registering a used car from out of state--glad to hear it. Enjoy your car. |

Sorry man I went back and re-read what I wrote last night. I came across quite strong. I'm sorry. With that being said the inspectors were great and were very helpful here in Johnston County. The DMV license / tag office was a different story.

The new law is very clear. It states the car must have a title or Manufacturer's Certificate of origin for the frame, engine and transmission. If you do not have those, you are going to have to get two appraisals and then have the car bonded for 1.5% of it's higher appraised value.
So you're looking at spending another $1,000 to be licensed in NC as a 1965 Replica. It sucks. A friend of mine went through this recently. I called the DMV and they told me the same thing. HTH

Not to hijack the thread, but what is the process if you move here with a car already titled/licensed in another state? Do you just bring in the license plate and title and ask for it to be transferred?

If it's already titled I think you still have to do like I did and it has to be inspected prior to receiving the new title as well as the MVR 2 form being completed. The new laws have definitely made it harder to bring cars or build cars in this State.

Yep, that's what I went through to register my car. And as I mentioned in my original post, it was a pain in the arse (irrespective of what Hitch suggests:rolleyes:)! |

The rules must be different ( I don't have the statute in front of me) if the car had been previously registered. The one I purchased was titled in VA. I did not have to secure a bond, no appraisal, no problems. I trailered the car to the Theft and License showed the original title from VA, the inspector tooks some pics and gave me a form to take to DMV. I received my tags and title and was good to go.
If the car has never been registered I could see where it would be more difficult. I think the biggest problem with any old car now is that if you want the inspector to come to your house that can take a lot more time.

Well, I still own a house in Las Vegas where the car is registered and spend a significant amount of time there, so I will probably just keep it registered there as well as keep my residency there if it is that much of a pain.

I purchased a Backdraft that was registered in TN. No problem getting a tag. I have 12 months to get the state inspector to look at. After inspection I can get a NC title. Its registered as a 1965. From what I understand with it being a 1965 its valued at $500.00 for property tax:) but full value on sales tax:(
