Roller pilot bearing
Well the more I learn about Fords the less I know.. LOL... I had a roller pilot bearing for the Tremec that I put in my Chevy and it has an OD of about 1.125 or so. Then since I have a Tremec in the Cobra I know that this one would not work. So I ordered up one from Summit for a 351W and it is HUGE.. I measured the crank and the OD of the crank for the pilot bearing is about .9735 or 15/16ths. Does anyone know a good part number for the this application? Thanks so much...

Yeah that's my plan for tomorrow. It was a good day in the garage, I got the Bellhousing plate bolted up, the water pump attached, the headers polished up, the engine primed, pullies installed, etc.. I was just hoping to get the pilot bearing installed. I put the motor together last weekend and was hoping to put it in next weekend. I'm going to go to CarQuest in the morning to see if my guy can help me out. Thanks.

Is this an aftermarket crankshaft or a factory crank?
That 15/16" dimension sounds small...if I remember right, the OD of the bushing/bearing should be around 1-3/8".
I can get you a RAM part number if you can give the measurement.

Brent, thanks. This is not a factory setup as the block is a SVO 351W block with Cleveland mains. There was a roller pilot bearing in there that I removed and didn't think much of it when I removed it a few months ago. The measurement is .9725 or 15/16. I have two Chevrolet roller pilot bearings sitting on the shelf but they are to big at about 1.125. This build has been a pain. LOL. Thank you for your help.

Let me look through the catalog again.
Keep in mind that 15/16" is .9375"....is your first measurement with a caliper?

Looked through the catalog which includes bearings/bushings for Ford, Chevy, Jeep, etc. and couldn't find anything with that OD. I build a lot of engines that use the Cleveland crankshaft and they all require the same SBF bearing/bushing. I usually use the Ford Racing bearing or a RAM bushing.

Yep I fat fingered the keyboard this morning. You are right.. And yes I measured with a caliper. I'm confused too as I've never seen one this small of a OD either. The ID is .585 if that helps. Thanks for help.

That's a common ID....but that OD sure is whopper-jawed...
If you can't find anything, you may have to get a bushing and have the OD turned down.

I always felt that a properly greased bronze bushing would wear gradually over a long period of time. The roller bearing can fail catastrophicaly all of a sudden. What do the brand new cars with manual transmissions from the factory use???

Yeah I agree... I'm scratching my head about it. I may have to get one and turn it down.

Okay, I'm an idiot.. I've been looking at the crank and the Ford Racing throw out bearing that I have M-7600-A. It appears that when the machine shop removed the throw out bearing they only removed the inner race. So problem solved. LOL
Brent sorry to make you jump through hoops to try and help me. You are a great resource.

keep the pilot bearing, replace the machine shop...%/

Got the shell out but had to cut it out as there was no way to get the slide puller fingers behind it. New pilot bearing is now installed and the flywheel is installed as well. I have to order some different bolts for the pressure plate as the ones I have are 5/16 and it appears the bolt holes in the Fidanza flywheel has 8mm holes. Eventually I will have this motor back in.. lol

You are absolutely correct! Most clutch applications that I have seen over the years were bronze pilot bushings. Very little lube, if any, is needed. You want the input shaft to stop spinning at the proper time. Too much lube can keep the input shaft moving. That is what causes a grind into reverse. Very seldom does a pliot bushing wear out and become a problem. They work just fine.
Good Luck!
