what a pain in the gasss?
this past Sunday after a short ride I filled my cobra up with gas and put it in the detached garage .
Last night I went in the garage to check a part number and the smell of gas fumes was horrendous. Looked in the engine compartment for a leak couldn't find anything, walking around the back of a car I see that the gas has overflowed gobs all over the rear paint expanding the filler cap gasket to where it's sticking out like a tongue? Cleaned everything up stuck a rags down the spout to suck up more gas, just checked it again this morning it's doing the same thing temperature here has risen so I guess it's a expansion situation. Is this the way it is or should there be some sort of a drain tube? or one that I could put in? |
YUK! to the gas over flowing that is. Sounds like you might have filled it a bit too full, or maybe the gasket is bad. Another thought, most gas has 10% ethonal in it, that may be the reason the gasket started to stretch out like a tongue, perhaps a new gasket would help.
You're absolutely correct, install an over flow tube (to the ground) and make sure the vent is working correctly and all the filler hose are tight. Sounds like a good little weekend project ..a way to show your baby some love. Bill :) |
Check your vent tube, sounds like the line or vent is clogged.
Should be separate from the fill and line not kinked or obstructed in any way. |
Hey Dennis. That does not sound good but appreciate you sharing this as a look out for the rest of us. Let us know what you find out was the cause.
By the way, I think I am going to get mine out for 1st time today since it got delivered. Weather is sunny (Finally)and 40 degrees in Illinois. |
Mine had the same problem when I look at the vent line i found it was to long shorten it and this cure the problem but make sure its not plug.

after sponging up gas three times while the car sat in the garage I decided to take it around the block for a spin ,check it again the gas sucked way back down into the tank.
I looked up in the rear wheel well I can see there's a small rubber tube around 4 inches down the spout that seems to get routed to a aluminum junction that has two small rubber hoses coming out of it that seemingly go back to the tank. I'll have to disconnect them to check if there's a clog I presume. |

As mentioned, make sure it isn't blocked.
Apart from causing the overflow you speak of a blocked vent/ no vent can cause your fuel tank to suck itself flat as fuel is used but not replaced with air. |

The tank setup may be a bit similar to mine in respect of the filler pipe being towards the centre and not at the front highest point. That's if your tank is on some sort of slope.
Anticipating a similar problem I will also be adding a small fitting at the highest (front) point of the tank and back up to the filler pipe. This will act as an air bleed/ balance tube. If you think this is the case it may be as simple as drill/ tap and fit a 1/8th BSP x 1/4" hose fitting and run a hose back up. Please let us know what you do that fixes this problem. Cheers |
