Wilwood Clutch Master failure at 2000 miles
Well it looks like the clutch master (wilwood) failed. The cool thing is it didn't just fail outright, which would have been a simple, cheap fix. It actually halfway failed, every once in a while. The piston binded on occation not allowing the full weight of the pressure plate to release (think small slippage under load) not enought to be noticed but enough to create a ton of heat. Endstate: cluth, pressure plate, T/O bearing, flywheel, and the damn clutch master replaced. A $hitload of money for a part that failed VERY early for a new piece.

Slave cylinder?
You may want to check the geometry of your clutch fork/slave cylinder setup. It may not be the slave cylinder's fault. Wilwood makes a great slave and I've used them for years. Also make sure that the clutch was adjusted correctly. If it's a Long style pressure plate, as the clutch wears, the fingers actually get closer to the throw out bearing. Having said that, no manufacturer is perfect, so you could have got a bad one. But it's worth checking out other things first just to make sure. |
Not the slave, the master (http://www.backdraftparts.com/shopexd.asp?id=112)
Taking the piston out you could see wear marks and the piston had to be pulled out, it didn't just freely come out. |
My friend, clutch hydraulics generally won't cause your problem. Hydraulic problems, either master or slave, will affect shifting and release problems, not pressure plate force problems. Most pistons will not just fall out on disassembly and a wear pattern is normal. Good luck on your fix.

Give it an eyeball in place and see if it's working against a misalignment. That takes them out quickly and I have also seen a couple fail brand new. There are other brands with a stainless steel liner I would consider replacing it with.

On furture inspection and having a replacement wilwood in hand to compare with, the original unit was not a wilwood. I believe the failure was due to moisture in the fluid causing corrosion in the system. It will be something I will keep my eye on to see if the problem is re-occuring.

I use Castrol GTLMA brake fluid (low moisture activity).
