I do seem to recall I have heard that said before but that's another story for another time.:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

Took the first couple of short rides yesterday and today. Got "sick" yesterday afternoon so I could go home and work on it. Little things are still popping up to fix like my water temp gauge which was going almost to the peg in the hot zone but it wasn’t boiling over. Checking various places with the heat gun showed seemed normal. Thought it might be the sending unit since the one I installed fit the intake (PI) but wasn’t the one which came with the kit. Yup, that was it. Now the water temp never goes over about 87c which the temp gun verifies. Didn’t have a good place to put the oil temp sender until today. So I drilled out the center of the OP drain plug and tapped it for the oil temp sender and now it works great to. That was kind of touchy to do with just a drill press, as there’s not much left of the drain plug after drilling enough out for the 1/8 NPT sender. Also found that I’d forgotten to bolt the driveshaft safety hoop in place. That was a nice racket! I thought I’d dropped something out of the car substantial.

Now to track down why I have no speedo or fuel level..........................

The speedo needs to be calibrated if its a VDO. Instrux are in the manual. unfortunately mine didnt work at all and I found it wasn't hooked up at the diff and I needed to get the wiring spool piece from BDR and hard wire it. works fine now.

Tom Wells 06-12-2011 05:46 PM

Steve,

Sounds and looks mighty fine!

BTW we don't need no stinkin' fuel gauge. That's what the trip odometer is for **) Two digits is about all you'll need LOL

If you want to go cruising, maybe I can meet up with you somewhere.

Tom

Put about 40 miles on the girl today and she is *****IN"! Of course I'm still working on things but am very encouraged. Changed the oil yesterday, cut open the filter and found nothing but a few flecks here and there. I changed from the straight 30wt. that I used for startup to 5-30. Why did I go that low you may ask? And I have to say mostly curiosity. With the straight 30 in the sump the OP never got below 4 bar (58psi) even with the oil @ 215+F. So I was changing it anyway and staying conventional for about 1000mi and then I'll be changing again to synthetic. So I figured the worse that would happen is that my OP would not be high enough for me and I'd have to change perfectly good oil. With this oil even after 40 miles with a short stint on I95 and some stop lights, the oil temp up to 120c (248F) the OP still stayed above 2 bar (29+ psi) @ idle. Of course any time the revs started to climb the OP immediately shot up to. I’m just gonna keep this until I change the oil again.

No real leaks to speak of either. Heck my diff leaks more than the dinosaur lump. That little speck on the floor in the pic is from the diff pinion seal. Gonna have to do something about that.

This is a pic of the side pipe this evening. Can ya tell I’ve been running leaded gas? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a pipe like that.:3DSMILE:

Tom, I’d love to some time.

879, thanks for the heads up on the gauge calibration but I got nuthin’ there. It must make intermittent contact because I have 3 miles on it now. Any hints on where I might find both the fuel and speedo problem in the harness?

As fate would have it, when I pulled up onto 95 today what was right there but a Z06 vette and a 350z driving together. Let’s just say that the Cobra was immediately noticed…………
Showing up in a group like that with a Cobra is like going to a hammer convention with Mjölner.

Once I got the wiring spool piece at the diff installed and connected it to the end of the harness, I ran the car around and the speedo would come on intermittently. The issue wound up being the quick connect connection...although it appeared that the connections were solid, it apparently was not. We ended up hardwiring it and it works fine now. There is not alot of extra slack in the harness wire, so make sure you only cut/strip once ;) I have no ideas on the fuel gauge, but I would check the quick connects at the fuel tank to the harness....it could be the same issue.

I also also have the diff joints leaking a bit...still happening after a year. I just tighten them up from time to time. All bolts appear tight, but still get the drip. I guess its just par for the course

lovehamr 06-13-2011 07:28 PM

Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look. Beemers don't normally drip like this. The krauts are just too focused (anal) to let that stuff happen. That seems to be why they make good cars. I'm wondering if these rear ends are all just used rear ends. I'm thinking about swapping out for a posi anyway.

I have the LSD. Still drips. I've had my mechanic tighten everything up last fall and started again recently, so I cinched everthing down and still have some drips. Oh well.....let me know if you find anything.

Great burnout out video! I could see that you have pusher fans. Did you add those or did you have them installed by the BDR dealer?

lovehamr 06-19-2011 08:36 PM

Re. the fans, I just added them yesterday. Had to build the bracket for them but they turned out nice. I used the "Fan2” circuit for them so they come on with the temp switch. They don’t push much air but they look cool!

madmaxx 06-19-2011 08:44 PM

Its official, burn down video. Your not cheating on us are you. If this was your first burndown there appears to some incriminating burndown marks in the pavement where you started. Sure this was not your second, LOL

lovehamr 06-19-2011 08:56 PM

If you'll notice, those other marks were made by kids running rubber pizza cutters by the looks of them!

Where'd you get the vinyl? it looks great...Its next on my list.

Did you have to cut the front number to make it work on the front, or did it come that way?

lovehamr 07-12-2011 10:03 PM

Thanx 879. The numbers, side rondells and Gulf stickers are all from Raceline Digital. I did the cutting on the front number but the rondell is painted on from the BDR factory as is the trunk rondell. All the others are static clings from Finishline.

BDR879 07-13-2011 07:52 AM

Perfect. I am going to order the USRRC Race 1965 Kit from them. I don't have the rondells painted on, so I'll have to do some cutting.

Thanks for the info:cool:

Just order the rondells as well. That's what are on the sides of my car, only the trunk and hood rondells are paint.
