When I turn off the key...my BDR still runs??
Last night I took my BDR for a quick spin...when I pulled back into my garage...I turned off the key...but the engine continued to run...I ended up turning the battery kill switch off...and it finally died...
Occasionally my ignition switch binds...can I safely assume it's time to replace the ignition switch...I checked all the ignition switch connections...and they all appear secure...any thing else I should check? Hope everyone's having a great 4th of July weekend! Randy BDR #340 |
most likely your ignition switch is going south. Try wiggling the key next time usually helps align the contacts.

Replace the ignition switch, this can get worse. On my Backdraft, the switch went out slowly, but in the other direction. Was cruising on the freeway when it just went dead, coasted over to the side and tried to start it again, it fired and made it about 100 feet. Kept this up till I got it off the busy road. Switch was hot. Replaced it on the side of the road, very easy, and all was well and still is. That thing can strand you and they are cheap.

The switches are serious POSs. When I removed mine it literally fell apart in my hand. Of course this could have been due to the fact that it was glued into the dash with about a pound of silicone. I went down to O Rielly's and picked one off the wall. Works perfect.

I wouldn't say "Perfect" just because it's an absolute but it works way better than the original. Our originals are generic doo doo anyway and the size of the opening in the dash is for the universal types that you'll find in the help section of just about any auto parts store. I had to use an extra washer as a spacer in mine but that kept me from having to glue it in with a huge glob of silicone. Nearly all of them will have 3 posts on the back and we only use 2 of them because of the starter button but even those are labeled. So, unless you just really have no faith in your mechanical ability at all, shag your happy azz down to the parts store and pick one up! I think you'll be glad you did.

Are you sure its not run on from the electric fan?
Although it sounds like the ignition key is a common problem on the BDR. Is it a Lucas switch? |
