Rear hub bearing R & R
Well I've wrestled with the R&R of my driver's side rear bearing for 2 days now. The thing is mostly together now but when I tighten the stub axle bolt the hub locks up. When the bolt is loosened the hub turns nice and smooth. I cleaned the splines of both the axle and hub while everything was apart and they slide together pretty easily now so I don't think there is any binding there. After going over everything in my head ad-nauseum, the only thing that seems out of place is something that looks like a large washer. At some point while I was getting the old bearing out (it came out in about a bazillion pieces) this thing popped out on the floor.

If it's a spacer, where in the stack does it go? I've been on quite a few beemer forums and DIYs to get this done but none of them mention a spacer of any kind. Of course they don't mention pin drive hubs or bolts holding the stub axles either.:JEKYLHYDE |
Looks like some sort of race or grease seal maybe...

After Mike at Iconic parts and Brian at Vintage both returned my emails, the hub assembly went together with no more hitches. That piece above is a spacer that goes between the stub axle, which apparently is a V8 Audi piece, and the hub bearing which is a beemer part. That's why none of the BMW how to videos or write-ups mention it. But it bridges the gap so to speak between the broach cut beemer bearing and the radiused Audi axle.

FYI. Beemer = BMW motorcycle. Bimmer= BMW automobiles
Minor detail, but big deal for BMW fanatics like me. SkipB |

Then why write a reply?

Why correct current vernacular BMW terminology on a Cobra site in the first place? I was going to add “Can you get any more anal?” But then I thought “Hmmm, if he’s that big of a BMW guy, the answer is most likely YES.” So I omitted it.

OK, I give up. Call a BMW anything you want. Thanks for calling me anal. Perhaps you are unaware that some of your car is based on Bimmer parts? Oh, sorry, Beemer.
Merry Christmas. SkipB |
Jeez Skip, relax. I'm just jacking with you because you're a self professed B somethingorotherophile, it wasn't meant as an actual insult. And come on man, can you not admit that correcting someone in a Cobra forum on the bimmer vs. beemer thing is at least verging on anal?
Steve And Merry Christmas to you to homey. Really, not messing with you at all on that one. I hope Santa is extra good to you.:) |
Steve,
I am very relaxed, thank you. And apparently having a good time with this like you are. Sorry to have hijacked your thread that started with a legitimate problem with a BMW or other German car related part. I am glad you got it solved. I just remember when I had my Backdraft and got a bit upset when some other replica owners called it "that fake Cobra made from old Beemer parts". It made me feel better to correct them on at least the Beemer thing. Maybe you will never run into this problem. But, I did more than once and I didn't like having my car's heritage questioned. Probably just a Calfornia thing where maybe car nuts do get a bit anal. I should have explained this earlier. Perhaps my vernacular correction would have made more sense. Again sorry for messing with you a bit. Have fun with your Backdraft. I really miss mine and may have to get another one next year. Even if it is made with German car parts. It does make it handle and ride better than any other replica I drove. Happy Holidays! SkipB |
Yeah, I'm over the whole fake thing, I think I was even before I got mine just from hanging out here!
I hope Santa brings you a new Cobra, one filled with recycled Messerschmitts! Then you can have as much fun as I am with mine. Steve |
LH, thanks for the PM. It's always good to hear about someones pain so when it happens to you there is a connection.
Happy Holidays and don't mix the cheer with the Cobra. Rich |
LH, Replaced the DR side half shaft and BRG. That fixed the clicking noise. spent around 1.5 hrs replacing the brg wasen't to bad a job, the the brg was trashed and shaft wasn't much better.
parts cost 160.00 for both parts new Rich |
I'm extremely interested in how you did that in 1.5 hours! It took me a heck of a lot longer than that for mine. Would you do at least a short write up on what tools and procedures you used? The part #s and where you got them would be quite helpful as well.
Thanks, Steve |
Sent PM with link, Oops forgot to mention use of slidehammer bolted to flange to remove same.
