Quick Power Steering Rack Options
Hello again,
I am autocrossing my Backdraft (#785, built in summer of 2009). I would like to install power steering. Backdraft parts offers a power steering rack, but it is 3 turns lock-to-lock. I'm looking for something a little quicker, maybe around 2.5 turns lock-to-lock? Does anyone have any leads on a power steering rack that will bolt in like the Backdraft rack? I already have a lead on a pump system, now just need to figure out the rack. Thanks. |
Have you checked Unisteer or Bimmerworld?

Jeg's has steering quickeners in 1.5 to 1 and 2 to 1 from two manufacturers.
One is cast iron and the more expensive one is aluminum. Two bolts hold then on. I think they go at end of steering shaft. |
The BDR rack is from a Toyota right hand drive fliped up side down. A Bimmer rack will not work. I have been kicking this problem around for a long time and think a Mustang after market rack shortened to the correct length for the correct Ackerman effect will work well.

How will you get the Mustang rack to attach to Mazda tie rods?
Are they both metric? |
I think the tierod ends from the mustang will be comparable with the BMW spindles if not I am sure they can be drilled out or shimmed which ever is needed. There are no Mazda parts to worry about.

The Mustang ll tie rods could be added and Mazda tie rods replaced?
They are from an old model, so that sounds encouraging. Are you considering this for yourself? If so, please made lots of pictures. Mustang ll parts are readily available and some of the Mazda parts did not fit unless they came from Backdraft directly. Thanks, Russell |
First of all there are NO Mazda parts . You have a rack which must be shortened. You have the "tie rod ends that bolt
To the spindle (BMW). The ends have a ball joint at their ends, I may do it if the coat of the rack modification is not much. But after this years Reprile Round up I may retire the BDR, So PS won't be important , |

Ok I am confused. The tie rods are the least of your problem. I am sure you can take a few inches off the end of the Mustang rod. The key to making it work so you don't get bump steer is the proper length of the rack which must be shortened, so the pivot point at each end is in alignment with the angle of the control arm so everything moves in the same plane.
I will be seeing Mary Ann this weekend at Reptile Roundup and ask her what she is talking about with the Mazda rods etc. |

I have been wanting to add power steering to my car for a while but the supply of P/S racks was not on the last few shipments from South Africa. Flaming River was not to interested in building anything that was not Mustang ll 100%. I think they want to keep their great reputation intact. Please keep me in the loop. Thanks, Russell |
We are looking at developing a kit now. My goal is to offer a quicker manual rack and also a more readily available power rack AND a more robust system between the rack and column.
The question is how much demand is there? And at what price? Our intent would be to offer full kits with tie rods, pumps, etc. |

I'm still in the market for a power steering rack. I would really like to find a power steering rack quicker than the Backdraft power steering rack. Right now it's all about timing. I really want to get the power steering done over the winter so I will be ready for autocrossing in the the spring. Do you have any ideas of a timeframe? I have a pump and lines, but... Thanks... |
