Steering Shake, Brake Fluid

New BDR owner (of a used BDR #997) and I've noticed a few things after my first 100 miles (car has 513 miles now).

1) Steering wheel shake: Is normal? Its more than vibration and at first I thought it was perhaps flat spots in the tires. I don't notice it until ~60mph but it is moving quite a bit. I can see weights inside the front tires so I assume they were balanced at some point.

2) Brake fluid: While visually inspecting the steering I happened to notice the master cylinder is empty (ugh?!) %/. I tested the brake fluid light and it does come on with the ignition and go off when the car is started. I don't see any leaks other than some minor drip marks on the heat shield. Any guidance on this? Is DOT 5 Silcone (purple) as listed in the manual the right way to go? Looks like I will need a squirt bottle to refill it.

Thanks in advance from a Cobra newbie!

Hey Todd,
1.) Even though you see some weights you may have lost others. I would rebalance the front tires. Tire pressures around 28#. If you do remove the wheels, make sure they line up with the 5 lug recesses on the back of the wheel hub when going back on over the lugs for the hub assembly. Also verify that these are lined up now, since people can put them on wrong and induce this shake.

2.) High Temp Dot 4 in the brakes and clutch. Owners Manual is not up to date and a generic build. BTW your engine will prefer 10w30 oil.

Also if the car was on a lift or jacked up, make sure the front springs have settled properly back in the saddle. Can also verify and accomplish by doing some hard s turns in a parking lot.

Thanks Cashburn. You are with Vintage correct? If so, you guys built this one-- I love it.

I have reached out to Frank down in Boyton Beach about picking her up for the 500 mile service. Is the brake fluid disappearance normal?

Can any shop rebalanced these? I only ask because of the center hub and safety wire. This is all new to me.

Most shops won't touch them and should not touch them. You could have Custom Cars in Boynton do it on the service.

Your car disappeared from us for a few years, the owner must have kept the car under a blanket and never driven it. We only reconnected randomly at the AC auction in February where he sold the car.

It's overdue for the 500 mile checkup for sure. I've never seen a brake master go dry without a leak somewhere? Is it coming out the cap or ???

Ok will do. I am just waiting on them to send a truck around the state.

Turns out the fluid level was ok in the master. The fluid is clear and even with a flash light I could not see the level. Pinkie finger tells the truth. :)
