BDR Brake Master Cylinder

BDR Roadster #785
Built summer 2009

Does anyone have any ideas of what brake master cylinder was used? All I have been able to find out is mid to late 70's Mercedes 300 Diesel. And to pull the master cylinder and compare it paying particular attention to angles of brake line connections and reservoirs.

I need a rebuild kit to convert from DOT 5 brake fluid.

Thanks.

Thanks Cashburn... But I'm hoping to find out what rebuild kit I can acquire instead of having to buy an entire brake master cylinder.

You and me both brother

I have been asking the same question with no answer. If you find out please post and I will do the same.

Try this number from ATE: 251-611-021C for the Master. Here's a kit that should cross reference:

For the record, and anyone searching this forum, I just ordered a replacement brake master cylinder from BDR for $227 + ship. It is an updated version of my original (car 272), and it looks exactly like the MERCEDES-BENZ 1978 300D 3.0L L5 DIESEL - BECK/ARNLEY 0726331 one that Rock Auto sells. I'm not saying it is, but For $40 shipped, lets just say I got an extra one to try now. Not trying take biz away from BDR, but JEEZ, C'MON MAN, 6X MORE!!! Just wrong.

Quentin, when you get your replacement from BDR, can you let us know if it's a direct fit? I was going to order one for BDR354 and Backdraft said I would have to bend new lines for the replacement they had. I have looked at many similar ones at auto parts stores but so far have not found one that has same fittings and bore.
The rebuild kit that Jay talked about has not been available for a while. Anyway, let us know if it's a direct fit. If it is I am going to order one.

Mark, it's definitely not a direct fit. The inlets for the lines are at a slight angle, so the line will have to be bent down a little. I don't think you will have to completely rebend the lines though. Also the switch location is not at the end. It looks like it was shipped with a plug in one of the holes that will have to be removed for the switch. Either that, or go with a mechanical switch on the pedal. Here's some links to a couple pics. If you search for the BA part new number, you'll see it's the same.

I just received the $40 Beck Arnley 072-6331 Brake Master Cylinder from Rock auto. Link to pics below (no plug in the 3rd hole on this one). Sorry no side-by-side, the other is already at the shop.

Definitely, need to check the bore sizes for compatibility. Looks like some manufactures have updated models with smaller bore sizes.

Have to admit, when my clutch was fighting me, I ordered a new Backdraft slave cylinder and a new master cylinder. The slave fixed it, so the master is on the shelf in reserve. It is harder for me to get a weekend aside to do the work instead of working my job for the money to get the parts. Cashburn spends a lot of time on this forum answering our questions...to me, that is worth throwing him some business even if I could save some money elsewhere. I mean, to me the Cobra is more than just a car...if I was looking to just save money, I guess a Prius would have been a smarter choice.
