Possible Bad Ignition Coil?
I drove my car Wednesday night and everything seemed fine, other than the idle seemed to be a bit high. I don't think that's related though.
Today I went to start the car and I am not getting spark. Can the msd coil go bad just like that, or will there be some other lead up to it? And what coil should I be looking to replace it with (I'm assuming this is just the blaster ss)? |

Replaced it with another MSD Blaster 2 I had. Not all coils are MSD compatible - check the chart here: http://www.msdignition.com/instructi...ompability.pdf |
Yes, they can go bad in an instant. I had the same thing happen that you described and replaced it with the spare I carry in the trunk. Fired right up. I'm not going to knock MSD, there are already plenty of threads that do that, but carrying a spare is something to consider - easy road-side fix if it happens when you're out.

MSD has tons of quality problems. I had a bad coil out of the box. The E-core ones are supposed to be better, both performance and reliability. I replaced the original coil with this one: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8207/overview/

Assuming it is a bad coil, consider mounting off the engine. I went with this one, which has anti vibration mounting.

Before everybody blasts MSD...Did you check to see if the rotor is spinning?
Coil??? Have you checked the box? There are simple tests that you can do... |
Ndever had a coil go bad but had two of the MSD6 boxes blow out. Do the spark test (you can't just ground the coil / spark plug).

That's all it was. I'm not sure the coil in there was an MSD though, well, it's not. It looks kind of like a blaster SS, only it's black and has no labeling of any kind.
Also, it fired up hard immediately, and it has never fired up like that before. I guess let this be a warning to the other backdrafts of the same manufacturing date/car number (2012/ number 1109). |
I contacted MSD about a year ago and was told that the blaster coil on my Backddraft was not manufactured in black. My build number is 832 and the coil is mounted off the engine.

Second one I heard about this weekend. Glad you got it back up and running.

The "knock off" is a summit racing brand...
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-850500/overview/ Perhaps I just got a bad one? Who knows, but it appears to be the same exact unit as the msd. As said above, I have a spare msd now. |
