Low profile/drop down air filters

What is everyone using? I need to shave off about a 1/4" from my current filter and want something that looks and flows decent in the drop down style, preferably oval.

A good starting point would be for you to describe what you currently have, including engine, intake manifold and the current air cleaner / filter assembly.

I am looking for a drop down/low clearance air filter. I currently don't have one of them.

DWRAT 08-02-2015 01:16 PM

1/4"??? Maybe you could trim the base plate flange where it touches the carb.
this is assuming you have at least a 1/4" clearance between the top of carb and the lower filter plate.

itstock 08-02-2015 01:22 PM

The filter in it can't drop down anymore, it's against the carb as is, but A larger filter would clear, ideally, I guess I would like an oval drop base. But I can't seem to find any oval dropped bases, all are self made....which is an option. I am just trying to button things up though.

itstock 08-02-2015 01:25 PM

I guess another option is just trimming this filter where it is hitting the carb in the front and back, as others have done.

9" K&N filters are available in a variety of heights (e.g. 2", 2.25", 2.375", etc.) - you could go to a lower filter.

Here is one, an expensive one.

The current filter already loses 40rwhp, so I do not want to switch to a filter with even less surface area.

Thanks for the link! For some reason google didn't come up with that one.

The turkey pan wasn't that far off in price either.

Thanks for the replies!

Here's the idea that I stole.
The example is for a tunnel wedge intake but can't be adapted to others.

Basically a drop down base plate, that allows you to find a couple extra centimetres.
Same vendor also manufactured and supplied mine, an after a bit of home customisation to fit. Job was done.
I'm pretty sure many others could fab them up too, they don't look all that complicated

Good luck with it.

Wow! Nobody mentioned my 9" low base..I'm hurt!
There are already old threads about it.

You can get it here as a complete kit. I make the base plates (low as you can go) and Mickmate is selling the whole kits. Several guys using them.

Not trying to sell you anything. Just thought I would make you aware of another option.

I know your looking for an oval drop base air cleaner, but Jegs/Summit both have round drop base air filters,I used one with a 1.5 inch drop base on my 65 Mustang with no problems......

I ended up using the original setup including the turkey pan. Thanks for the links and suggestions and if I wasn't swayed in to keeping the turkey pan, I would have listened to some of you.
