Backdraft title problem CT ( Need Advice )
I am trying to purchase a Backdraft in Connecticut that has been registered as a Composite 65 vehicle and then register it in Missouri. The dealer has no title or the original Statement of origin from Backdraft or Vintage Motorsports. The Missouri DMV has verified that CT does not issue a title and will register it with a notorized Bill Of Sale from the dealer and a copy of the MSO. The dealer stated that they have contacted Backdraft and could not get a copy. Any ideas on this mess? Did CT require the original owner to surrender the MSO when they registered it? The original owner is not being helpful per the Dealer.

Original MSOs are always surrendered to the DMV when first registered otherwise you could register/title again in another state.
Most dealers keep a copy of the MSO for sold vehicles on file, did you contact the original dealer who sold the chassis?

The CT DMV website says you (or the dealer) can request a replacement title (assuming the car had one at some time in the past).

Some states did not have titles until the 70s. New York for example did not become a title state until 1973. Some states that register replicas as "year of replication" do not have titles for the year replicated and do not issue titles for those vehicles, therefor no title for the selling dealer to transfer on what I assume is a used resale car.

From the CT DMV website, the number of the Title Division is 860 263-5710. Maybe they can help. Good luck.

Call the CT DMV at the number listed above, explain to them the issue you are having, they have a procedure in place to issue you state paperwork that Missouri will accept.

The original MSO was given to the original owner. As has been noted above you can call the CT DMV for help on this.
Luckily we have just had SEMA get a bill through here to start issuing titles again on old vehicles, but that won't help you for a year. |

As much as I despise the DMV, I am in Missouri. If you need "boots on the ground" to help out, I can go to the DMV for you. (he said, hoping like heck that everything can be handled via email)

I had to go through this recently for someone else, here is the official letter from CT DMV on the titles. http://www.ct.gov/dmv/lib/dmv/title_letter.pdf |

It appears that letter deals more with registering a vehicle in CT. STLN65 has a vehicle registered in CT that he wants to register in Missouri.
Edit: The letter does indicate a title is not required for the vehicle if is over 20 model years old, and I have found elsewhere that a title is not required to sell that vehicle, but dealers are required to get replacement titles if the purchaser resides outside CT. |

It appears the dealer doesn't really understand what the CT DMV requires.
From DMV: Selling a Vehicle Without a Title
"If the vehicle is being sold to someone in another state, you must request a replacement title. Once you have received the duplicate title, complete the transfer section on the reverse side of the title and provide to the buyer of the vehicle."
So, back to the dealer to initiate the process. |
