Fuel Fumes ?
Question for the group regarding fuel fumes. I have roush 427 carbureted motor and I had this issue before and it hasn't happened again until now. I keep my cobra in my garage and awhile back I noticed after parking I smelled a lot of fuel fumes within my garage and into the house. I pull in and immediately **** car off not to let it run for any period of time. I originally thought maybe some leftover fuel in carb caused this,
Issue didn't seem to resurface until yesterday. Yesterday i did fill up my tank probably close to full. When I got home pulled in shut car off and that's it. Now even today a day later a still have very strong fumes smell in garage and within house. The only thing I did do was fill up tank. Could this be issue maybe I filled it up to much and doesn't vent properly? Thiughts or comment greatly appreciated as my wife will be a happy if we can find a resolution. Thanks Doug |
Most likely filled the vent tube. You can run a charcoal canister on the tank to eliminate this from happening.

Thanks Joe. Where do I get one of those? Also is this because I filled the tank up to much?

For my build I bought mine from eBay.hard to say could have filled to high or depending on the filler neck it only takes a little bit for it not to breathe.you just need a basic one, it's around 30-40 dollars. Very simple to hook up,I'm not able to post pics yet for some reason keeps saying moderator has to approve.when I'm able to I could send a diagram for hook up or you can just google it. It's 2 vacuum hoses 1 off motor and 1 off tank both go to the canister and will never smell again.

I had the exact same problem.
Smell fuel after fill up. Ended up being the top seal on the tank where the sender and fuel pickup goes into the tank. Most likely there's a access hole in your truck that will allow you to see it perfect. |

I tend to run mine down to around a 1/4 tank (who knows how much fuel is actually left) and then I add 10-gallons. Never any more. My needle shows ~9/10 full so I rinse and repeat.

Thanks everyone good information..

I have found that most pumps shut off when the tank is completely full (IE do not pump another penny in and stop). If it is hot out and you fill the tank with cool gas (from being stored underground), the gas will expand in the tank as it warms. I have had it start to leak overnight after a fill due to this (gas station less than 1 mile from the house). What I do to avoid this now is either fill up at a station maybe 10 miles out or go for a short 8-10 mile ride after filling. It has never happened again.
