Coyote Engine
Before I started this project, I asked around. Starting with backdraft, and ending with the local dealer. Will a Coyote fit? Oh, sure, it will fit! We have an installation kit for that, no problem.
OK, well, it's really not true. I'm not sure this is going to work out. It fits down in the engine bay. I had to remove the oil pan so it would fit between the motor mounts. And I had to remove the valve covers to get it in the hole. But it went in. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...psg4rrozi6.jpg The hood even fits over the supercharger. Mostly. There's a little bit of interference that needs trimming underneath the scoop, but only about an inch or so. No big deal there. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...ps5nup0dhm.jpg The engine is in, but there are some real problems. As you can see, the steering column is in the way, and is going to have to be moved. It hits the front corner of the cylinder head, and blocks the dipstick. That's not a real problem, I suppose. I can use street rod parts and move it around enough to work. I think I need to move it up about an inch or two. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...pstmisqalo.jpg But, here's the real issu. And this could be a deal breaker. The alternator. Obviously, the stock part will not fit. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...pswwif5xtl.jpg I have ordered a small 80A one wire part; but it hasn't come in yet. http://performancedistributors.com/w...14/01/6666.jpg The only way to make an alternator fit here would be to notch the frame rail. Since there's an extra plate welded in, that's an obvious weak spot. Not sure I want to be cutting in to that. I could raise the engine 1/2- 3/4" for more room here. But then I have to cut in to the hood more. It also looks like the oil pan will hang below the frame rails a little bit. May have to fab a skid plate for that and the transmission. This was supposed to be a fairly easy job. Sigh. ;) |
You're making great progress and I'm def envious.
I came across another "flipped" alternator kit for the Coyote. https://pbhperformance.com/shop/coyo...sory-brackets/ |

I'll be interested to hear how it is changing the plugs........ or anything else.

The small racing alternator arrived today. Doesn't fit. Even with moving the engine over 1/2", there's not nearly enough room for an alternator in the stock location. I sent an e-mail to Power by the Hour to see what they might have available. I like their front mounted alternator mount, that might work. There's a ton of room on the right side of the engine, where the A/C compressor used to be. If I was willing to pull the engine back out, I might be able to fab a bracket to put it there. Trying to get it done while lying on my back in a tight space is almost impossible. |

Be sure to be on good terms with a local parts store that will not mind if you buy a dozen belts and return the 11 that don't fit.

Something you guys want to be aware of, if not sensitive to, is the fact that alt's have an internal fan to cool the alternator. The fan and its air flow presuppose a clockwise rotation of the alternator.

I think I may end up putting it on the right side, and running it off of the A/C pulley. What a pain. |
This is BDR 1591 [at VMS] which Jay is building for a customer at of his.
There a thread posted on this build and that where I copied the photo for reference. |

I sent them an e-mail asking for more details. The parts are one off, I'm sure. But if they're willing to make them, I'm willing to buy. :) |
Can the alternator be fitted in the normal manner on your passenger side just under the crank centreline next to the oil pan?

That's going to be an absolute animal when you get it running Bob.
Hope you can come up with what looks like it is "meant to there". Gary |
