Backdraft suspension
 

Hello!
Is there anybody who has another backdraft suspension system instead of the original one! I am driving the original system with the KYB shocks! Would be glad to get some informations also about the driving (comfortable or sporty)!
I like to hear from different options!

One is not going to change the suspension system.. It is a BMW E36 system, no one will rip it out and change to say Corvette C6 upper and lower control arms.

One can improve upon the stock E36 suspension system with performance E36 parts. There are many websites and companies dealing with performance parts for an E36.

One can also improve upon the shocks. Here is a thread on the subject started by you.

Now I am asking for a complete new setup.
The reason is, that I am satisfied with the standard suspension, but probably someone has a better setup.
It would be useful for anybody else, who is interested in changing his setup.
I am not interested in buying and trying.
That is why I made a new thread for a complete suspension setup.
So would be glad to get some more information.
What JRI shocks or suspension do you drive grey65?

Better is a relative term, what is better for one person is not better for another person.

No company has performance stuff for a Backdraft Cobra. You have to find BMW E36 stuff that will fit and come up with what helps and what doesn't help. Example.. the front struts on a Backdraft are Audi A1000 cartridges and the rear shocks are VW Beatle. The standard manual steering rack is from a RHD Toyota pickup. Your car is a mix of parts. There are less than 1,900 Backdrafts, of which maybe 5% will ever get modified... No one makes parts for a Backdraft as it would be the worst business decision they could make.

Is ride comfort important, it ride comfort a non issue

Are potholes a concern

There are a zillion things that go into determining what a good setup is.

I have two sets of wheels
18x11 Front and 18x11.75 Rear With 315/30/18 and 335/30/18 BFG Rivals
18x10.5 Front and 19x11 Rear With 285/30/18 and 305/30/19 Bridgestone RE11's

Car total weight
Car front to rear percentage

The list goes on and on.

My car is more than likely the best handling Backdraft for what I use it for (Goodguys Autocrosses), if I were to run a track day event I make many changes....

Basically there is no simple answer to your question

I use double adjustable shocks/struts. Do you understand how shocks work (compression/rebound)? If not you will make things worse by adjusting and should stick with non adjustable ones...

Also, starting with your OEM BDR the choices can be limited.
Have you done a limited slip diff yet ? brakes ? looked at M3 suspension components ?
there really haven't been any owners going that route aftermarket that I've seen recently

Since you're in Germany, maybe you can get an entire E36 M3 and pick and choose.

I believe he means more supple and progressive I to have a backdraft and think this is a very good question.looking forward to some more replies.

I am working with a suspension shop in NC who builds suspensions for many of the teams that participate in US series: NASCAR, endurance racing, etc...knows his stuff. Ohlins put me in touch with him as he sells more of their stuff in the US than any other shop. He is going to put together a bolt in Ohlins Road and Track setup for the Backdraft. Single adjustable shock with Ohlins DFV valving, adjustable camber plates, I think separate spring preload and ride height adjustment. I am going with a 300f/600r spring rates and will see how that is as a compromise for an occasional track day car. I am getting him some parts from the original setup now as a reference and hope to have it in the car by late Jan. Keep in mind, with such a setup you will need to find a shop that can corner balance the car once ride height is set to get the most out of it. I will report back on fit and finish and ride quality once it's in the car. The fact that the stock front shock expands enough to allow the spring to unseat makes for a low bar to exceed the original setup.
