replacement gas cap
Stopped at the station to fuel up this morning and couldn't get the locking gas cap to open (key wouldn't turn). Anyone replaced theirs and know what the part# was? I am thinking about going with a non-locking cap.
Thanks |
I'm pretty sure Superformance and the Backdrafts use the same filler / locking caps assemblies. Both cars made in SA.
(both caps appear the same and the keys have the same cap manufacturer logo "PJ") The non-locking for the SPF is NAPA 703-1687. I'd give it a try. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7031043 One thing of caution: This may be a non-vented cap. You may have to mod it with your trusty drill. Edit: The Moto-Rad (manufacturer) site shows fitment on a 1978 Corolla. Which is vented. |
Thanks Spdbrake! I got it open last night but it needs to be replaced. I will be trying the NAPA part.

Quick update: got the NAPA (stant) gas cap. It fits the hole perfectly, problem is the black handle keeps the cover from latching. I will post again when I decide how to deal with this.

Using the information above, I now have a non-locking vented cap. I found the locking cap to be an annoyance.
When you order the above part number, this is what you get. The caution on the top tells you that it's not a vented cap, https://i.imgur.com/3skUE8W.jpg https://i.imgur.com/LL7Zm34.jpg But, a minute or two with a small drill bit and it's vented, with a baffle. https://i.imgur.com/9Nkawth.jpg The chrome cover is just a smidgen too large to fit inside the Le Mans cap. So I tossed it out. As mentioned, the plastic handle sit up too far, and interferes with the spring bolt on the underside of the Le Mans cap. A few minutes with some sharp tools, and that problem is resolved. https://i.imgur.com/hOOLImu.jpg Voila! The perfect fit. https://i.imgur.com/vm3Cz8v.jpg |
