Fuel filter placement.

Everyone.

I pulled the plastic tank out of my car because I am replacing it with an aluminum one. Right at the sending unit, attached with rubber hose , was an inline fuel filter. Nothing fancy. Looks like an old Purolator or Fram clear filter. My question is was this something that was installed when the car was built or did someone add this afterwards because as far as I have ever known it was not a good idea to put an inline fuel filter on the suction side of a mechanical fuel pump. What are your thoughts? Have you seen this filter location on your cars also? Thanks

Just about all of the ERA cars have a cannister type fuel filter right in front of the fuel tank.

Patrick.

Thanks for the fast reply. I did a little research after reading your response and came up with this recommendation.
"A low-restriction (coarse, 100-150 micron) fuel filter should be installed between the fuel tank and the fuel pump inlet to protect the pump from sediment."
Also, the link at the bottom of your post labeled Idling and accelerating isn't working.
