You will be miles ahead if you do not use the FRPP controls package. Use an aftermarket package like a MegaSquirt unit that is offered by DIYAutoTune <= clickable. It has a fully programmable fueling model, supports Alpha-N, Speed Density or Mass Air fueling models. The Mass Air model will work with the OEM MAF and associated hardware.

The ECU comes with a lifetime warranty and can be had as either a build your own wiring harness version or a use an OEM Ford harness version if you go with their PnP version. The OEM harness will need to have a pair of wires added for each of the TiVCT sensors although the control logic is already in the ECU. If you choose to lock out the OEM TiVCT controls then you can forget about the sensor wires.

Aside from the programability, the many built in engine fail safes, the knock detection and correction logic and the comprehensive nature of the tuning s/w, you get away from the lock to a vehicle's VIN code problems that the OEM controls package brings to the table.

BTW it is easy on the budget also.

Just an idea on the engine.

I came across a salvage Cobra today with a 5.4 S/C from what appears to be 2007+ GT500. Has a manual trans as well. Might be something to consider as it would have the harness, ecu, trans, throttle, accessories and also be a forged internals motor.

The 5.4 usually does not fit easily. The extra cubes come from a taller deck. Getting that to fit in the Cobra is not easy. Certainly not impossible, if you're willing to do some sheet metal work.

I think your right there Bob on size and fitting it in the BDR. The wrecked FFR looks to be shoehorned in the bay.

Looking at alternatives right now, cuz this Coyote thang is real drama and it is hard to get to decent ones.
My budget allows 347's. Good choice?

347s are good...all depends on the HP you want.

We've had good results with 351/427s either 480hp or for a little more investment 550hp.

If you are interested in a full-spec and proposal happy to help.

Windsor engines have been around forever. You can get incredible amounts of power, drivability, and reliance for relatively little money. They are easy to work on, and parts are available everywhere.

The 347 can be an excellent engine, depending on who builds it. Not an undertaking for an armature, as there is some specialized machining required. You want to be talking with someone who does this on a regular basis, and knows what they're doing.

My last Windsor was built by Mike Forte. If I was looking for another Windsor engine, I wouldn't hesitate to call him again.

Since you're considering a Windsor, you should also consider a 351 based engine. With a stock block you can easily go to 408 cubes. With a Dart Sportsman block, you can to 427 or 454 cubes. Money is about the same as for a 302 based engine.

There's no such thing as too much power, only not enough control. ;)
