Placement of mounting a fire extinguisher
Well hope to get my 2nd ride in this week with temps going up to the high 50's with still no salt on the road. Would like to get a few things done on my BDR also. I did buy a set of Quick Jacks so would like to do an inspection underneath. After my first ride a few weeks ago I did an inspection on the wind deflectors and did notice many of the hardware nuts were loose with one bolt missing an acorn nut.
I would like to mount a fire extinguisher and was wondering where most people mount them so they are out of the way. I was thinking behind the seats in the middle. Also do you mount them with sheet metal screws or thru bolt ? |
Top of bell housing tunnel slightly under the dash or on the passenger floor just in front of the seat. Vertical between the seats is not advisable as it can break the thin steel strap in an accident and become a projectile.
When they're mounted horizontally the neck support also helps in shear. The one I have on the bell housing tunnel is a H3R HG100B Halotron, In the trunk is a H3R MX100C Maxout Dry Sodium Bicarb ext. |
I did mine underneath the dash on top of the tunnel. The struts coming down help secure it. Use through bolts on the clamps. Sheet metal screws will not keep it in place in the event of an accident. The last thing you want is a fire extinguisher flying around.

I epoxied a plate with threaded holes to the back side of the tunnel and then screwed it down. This way I can remove it by myself and not have to have a helper every time.

I put mine on the passenger side footwell

Wherever you decide to mount it, consider replacing it with a Halotron unit. I carry a Halotron extinguisher, mounted on the tunnel, and I have a second, regular (messy) extinguisher in my trunk mounted to the roll bar. If the fire is in your car, I'll use the regular extinguisher on it, if the fire is in my car, then I'll use the Halotron extinguisher.

I did a fixed Halon system with nozzles in the engine compartment, driver's foot well and behind the dash. The actuation handle is on the dash within easy reach of the driver.
