Transmission tunnel upholstery
Besides the stock carpeted and the (debatable) diamond stitch pattern leather covering, what other covering options for the transmission tunnel have you seen or done? I would like to replace the stock carpet with plain black leather/vinyl without any stitching lines...

Bare aluminium looks good to my eye, but that's probably not what you want to hear :D
Cheers,
Glen
edit: like this maybe....
(not sure whose this one is, but it's a KMP)

Any upholstery shop can fabricate you a replacement cover. Typically Leather look vinyl with a bonded 1/8" or 3mm foam backing to smooth out any underlying contours.
Sewn edge beading in a contrasting color in the bends where the tunnel turns from Horz to Vert is popular.

I found this image online and it shows actually exactly what I was looking for. Will have a chat to my local upholsterer...

Were you able to chat with your guy? Only curious if someone could make "slip overs" because I've been thinking of having this done. I mean... some velcro would hold it down.

The problem is with the unevenness of the current carpeted tunnel. The carpet will need to be removed and the fibreglass substrate be prepared before you can just do a "slip-cover" over it. I am considering having a sheetmetal tunnel made that fits OVER the fibreglass one. This sheetmetal tunnel will then be upholstered with the leather-look vinyl. Simple, smooth & flat surfaces with no bulges!

Hi lombard,
I got mine done by backdraft in plain leather and a 'piping' strip on the edge/corner. The foam underneath smoothed it out enough to give nice and tight fitting look.
I can whatsapp you a pic if you want.

Done! I made the sheetmetal shroud myself and had it covered in matching leather-look vinyl with a 5mm foam batting underneath and the same design and colour stitching as on my dasboard. It fits snug-as-a-bug and looks neat and subtle. It feels solid and well-crafted (IMO)! Total cost, I hear you ask? All in about $28. I used sheetmetal that I had laying around to make the shroud thus the only cost-component was the upholstery. No, I do not take orders, I would need your car for measurements...

Congratulations! A job well done. Always much satisfaction in doing most of it yourself.
Cheers!
