Take Brent's recommendation and don't get bit.

Brent is correct again. I got bit by the Edelbrock FE waterpump leak from backing plate. The sealant used during original assembly appeared to be similar to 3M Super 77 multi-purpose spray adhesive. I cleaned up both surfaces with acetone, replaced captured O-ring gasket, applied silicone sealant to both surfaces, and then reassembled.
NO MORE LEAK. |
If that is an O-ring seal, as it looks like it is, and it was properly designed and machined, it should not need any silicon or glues. A light coat of silicone grease to prevent damage as things need to slide when torqueing. However if it leaked and the silicone sealant fixed it leave it alone. Just a curiosity on my part is all.
