Seat Cushions

3 Attachment(s)
It's winter time here in the Northeast and the Cobra is raised up and under the cover. Getting ready to start the wintertime projects. First one will be to redo the cushions with something that is a little more comfortable. They are 8 years old. I will post as I go along. Took one apart today. Not much to it and certainly not very high quality foam that is broken down. There have been previous posts providing links to sites selling different types of seat foam.

Fred, I added 1/2" green firm to the back and 1" blue medium the to the seat area Confor memory foam on the new seats I recently installed.
These folks are 25% cheaper than shops like Sportys and Aircraft Spruce.

Foam

Thanks. I remember. I still have the link to that place you provided and was looking at it today. That is exactly what I was looking to do. The original foam isn't bad just too mushy.

Out of curiosity, how did you remove the seat? Was it just a simple matter of removing the nuts from the underside of the floor pan?

Seat removal.

The seat is still in the car. The bottom cushion pops out. If you want to take the whole seat out, there are 4 bolts under the cushion. I have a seat adjuster so my seat bolts to that. I would imagine that if you don't have the adjustor, it bolts to the floor.

Seat cushion

Spdbrake, did you have the front of the cushion higher than the back? My B&B seats are 2”, rising to 3.5” in the front. But they’re not comfortable and despite the higher front, I feel like I’m sitting perfectly flat.

I sold my original Backdraft seats to a fellow building a Rat Rod.
They were a bit tight width wise and also not slotted for a crotch belt.

My current seats are Ultrashield. Lifted 1" in front.

Thanks SpdBrake. I think I can fashion a decent seat cushion from the wings&wheels link you provided earlier.

I replaced the BDR fiberglass tub seats with Cobra brand Roadster seats.

They have a metal frame, mesh supports, and structure.
A world of difference compared to sitting on fiberglass tubs bolted to the floor

LittlePig 03-13-2022 04:55 PM

Ozzie, did they bolt straight to the floor, and are you sitting at the same height?

Cobra seats

It wasn't simple.

Unbolting the OEM seats gave you a starting point.

I had plates fabricated because the seats are symmetrical and a different shape. One bracket to leverage the slider, and another to bolt the passenger seat to the floor.

Totally worth it, looks the same; sits so nice.

LittlePig 03-14-2022 02:58 PM

Thanks Ozzie for letting me pick your brains. Did you fabricate the plates yourself? I assume you used steel and bolted the new plates to the floor and went from there. I actually don’t need a slider as I seem to be sitting perfectly where my B&B fiberglass shell is currently placed.

My local bodyshop sent me to a metal supermarket.
I got a gauge thicker than they recommended, and that was overkill.

Take it apart, make a cardboard template from seat (four bolts) to the mount points (for me, four different points). Then I took it to the shop; they welded up the patterns and made threaded holes to the spec.

maybe $40

LittlePig 03-14-2022 05:22 PM

Thanks again Ozzie. That sounds easy enough, but if i’ve learned anything in life, it’s that nothing is as easy as I think it is. Last question (for now, and thanks for indulging me), do you remember what gauge steel was recommended? My guys might not have any idea.

I sure don't; but when you find the "metal supermarket" that I bought the stock from - they will have opinions on material and the correct gauge.

Thanks Ozzie
